Paint for Wood

I will be building my own biocube stand. Was wondering what paint to use for the wood? I want to paint it black.

Do you have any diy biocube stand links to share?

Thanks.

What type of wood? 2x4s or plywood?

I am going to build a stand for my Biocube 14 out of Baltic ply. Will probably stain it black then do a clear coat finish.

If you are going to paint 2x4s then I would avoid a latex paint. Not sure it will hold up to repeated exposure to saltwater?

Maybe an acrylic or enamel.

Search the DYI forum. I am sure this has been discussed in the past.

I used kilz primer then put semi-gloss black latex on top of that.. it's holding up perfectly fine, water beads on it, and cleanup of dried salt/alk drops is pretty easy.. I don't remember the exact paint but I think it was indoor/outdoor paint..

IMO only go high gloss if you have a VERY smooth and nearly perfect surface..

sherwin williams makes a pre-catalyzed epoxy paint that will not leave roller marks when applied, plus it dries very hard. its pricey per bucket but imo worth it.

I used a few cans of sandable primmer then layed down 4 coats of indoor out door furniture enamel. After each coat, the paint became glossy'r after each coat. Very nice finish and no brush marks

The acrylic hybrid paints are more durable than latex. Oil based paints are actually more susceptible to water damage (according to my painter who is very knowledgable in the chemistry of the paints)

Here is a quick pic of mine, still need to put the handles on but waiting to move it in its final spot so it can fit threw the door.

Did you use plywood or MDF for outside? Also, what was the total cost?

I framed it out with 2x3's, skinned the sides with a thin ply, front is a thicker ply, top is solid wood..

total cost, idk.. with paint and everything probably around 130.. I don't really remember..

Its actually under their Pro Industrial line. Stuff they recommend painting door frames with in commercial spaces lol, better hold up to my 2 yr old.

I would suggest using a polyurethane on the wood first, it soaks into the grain better to prevent water damage, and then paint with whatever you want, you could even spray paint it if you want, (but don't actually spray paint it) and then polyurethane over the paint to protect the paint from water damage.

Polyurethane comes in water based and oils based, oil based smells terrible, you can apply water based inside. It also comes in a variety of finishes from matte to satin to gloss so you don't have to worry about it being super shiny if you don't want that look.

if you love the look of the wood go for maple boards 1"x12"x8 gives you a perfect 3'high x 2' long stand. just screw the pieces together and add some triagle pieces for suport under the top. than figure a small piece of plywood for the bottom shelf with some 2x2 supports. will be sturdy for a biocube tank $39.94
