petkingdom619
And how exactly do they work? Link to comment
Jackal_Knight
Controller for what? You could be more specific. If your asking about aquarium controllers. Then u got apex, reef keeper, and reef angel. All are good choice I personally have a reer keeper plus since I got a good deal on it. All they do is controlled pumps, lights, ect. And monitor temp,pH, ect so they are kinda a fail safe so a broken heater can't crash your tank. Link to comment
Eisernes
You can control just about anything in your aquarium. Basically they monitor things like temp and control things by switching power on and off to different pieces of equipment based on a time schedule or a set condition like water temperature. It's a fancy automated on and off switch. First thing you have to know is what do you want to control? Link to comment
petkingdom619
Mainly worried about the heater getting to hot. Are there any that just comtroll the heater? I couldn't think of anything else to call it but a controller. Link to comment
ItsOnlyThai
JBJ and Finnex make universal heater controllers Link to comment
4x5
A really cheap option is the STC-1000 if you just want to control temp. You can rig it to control the heater and turn on a fan if the temperature gets too high. And it's $15 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-STC-1000-All-Purpose-Temperature-Controller-Thermostat-With-Sensor-220V-/371032589595? Link to comment
bevo5
Great thread - I'd like to control three lights and monitor temp/ph. - Which controller do you all like for that functionality? Link to comment
ItsOnlyThai
Apex is the most popular, followed by Reef Keeper and Reef Angel. Digital Aquatics are coming out with a new controller sometime this month called the Archon, which is supposed to have wireless connectivity built in. Bluefish has a module to control lights wirelessly through an app and they are in the process of releasing add ons to control other things too. Link to comment
janussolutions
If you plan to invest yourself in this hobby, I would advise you to invest in a controller that would allow you to enjoy your tank not only today, but also in the future, you could be surprised how quickly one can outgrow a basic controller Link to comment
petkingdom619
I had a larger tank in the past for a long time without a controller and did well. I just saw a few posts about heater malfunction and got a little paranoid Link to comment
bevo5
Good tips. I think the heater control is a reason alone to get a controller. Although the quality heaters these days should be a lot more reliable some of the other options that used to stick. Still, never hurts to have a backup. I'm going to poke around and try to find a good used controller for now. I don't know if I want to drop $500 just yet! Link to comment
