ReviloM
So my tank cracked yesterday. I am either going to replace the back, buy a pre-built tank, or make a new tank. I will weigh the costs. If I go the make one route, I need to make sure the dimensions are spot on.DIY tank dimensions:10mm Glass 36"x24"x16"Glass pieces to cut:Bottom: (1) 36"x 24" Regular glassSides: (2) 16"x24" Low IronFront/Back: (2) 36"x16" Low iron/Regular GlassMy question is will I have to add 20mm from the one highlighted in red so that the tank will silicone properly? I may just be over thinking this.Side pieces are inside the front and back piece. Link to comment
ReviloM
The sides would have to be cut 20mm less than 24" to compensate for the thickness of the front and back. if the sides were less, wouldn't that be less than the bottom pane, which I think is the guide. Link to comment
0utkast
sorry accidentally deleted the last post. Ugh you have me confused now!! if the bottom goes "in the middle of the sides". the front and back need 20mm added if it sits on top of the bottom the sides need it added Link to comment
0utkast
Example if the red is the bottom and you want the sides to go around it as a guide you need to add to the front. if you dont add to it you will have only the corners of the glass meeting and wont have a bond. Link to comment

ReviloM
Oh man, sorry about the tank crack! It sucks because I was saving my money for an apex gold kit but now I have to replace this tank. Luckily, it didn't break all the way off or I would have lost more than just 15g of water. My livestock survived. Link to comment
ReviloM
I just contacted a glass company near me for a quote on the replacement back piece and they quoted me $61 and said I could pickup tomorrow if ordered today. Is $61 a lot for a 8mm 36"x13" flat polished panel? Link to comment

I'd see if there are others near you that have different prices. Go with who is the best reviewed. Link to comment

I couldn't find any reviews but the first one is the closest to my home. Link to comment

If everyone is giving similar quotes, just go with the cheapest option, which in your case would be a more expensive piece of glass but it's closer to what you save in a few cents by buying a cheaper cut of glass, you have to pay via gas money to get it. It may be cheaper. I think I accidentally told her 3/8"(10mm) glass but I meant to tell her 5/16"(8mm). I will order it tomorrow. I just need to double check my measurements for that back panel. andiok
i would look for the cause that made the glass crack. if it came from normal causes means that, that side of the tanks has lots of stress and might require a thicker glass. and if thats the case i would take the 3/8" one. Link to comment

I checked for a cause but couldn't find one. There was no pressure from rocks on the back pane. I can only guess that the back pane had a micro fracture to begin with. Link to comment
andiok
ist a common prob with rimless tanks. i would check the bow when filled. if it bigger than 3/8" i would put some rims on it, cus thats whats probably happening there. maybe its just me though, wait for some other thoughts. Link to comment
NorthGaHillbilly
For what its worth, my deep blue tank, 36x18x12, is 8mm glass, as most commercial builders go as thin as they can, and I like to over build, I would probably go with the 10mm glass. Link to comment
k4ndyk1ng
The place I got my old sump from made a 12x16x20 out of 10mm glass and a brace wow Link to comment
ReviloM
According to uarujoey's chart, 6mm is the lowest to be used for a 3'x12" tank: http://diyfishkeepers.com/forum/index.php?pageid=glassthickness Link to comment
ReviloM
I'm glad I waited to buy the glass. The measurements of the front and back piece are 35 1/2" and not 36" as Innovative Marine states. All the panels are 1/2" short. Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
Dang! IM look like nice tanks, but I keep seeing stuff like this. Sorry to hear about your tank. I'm glad your livestock is okay. Link to comment
dling
I live in Buchanan GA. Not sure if it's worth the drive but I got my whole tank cut for 65.00 dollars 34x15x14. Link to comment
streamline.by.design
Seems like a nice price. I just got a 20*20*14 high w/ 1/4" glass for $74 Link to comment
hey
what brand tank was it? Also 12 inches deep really isn't a whole lot of pressure you could get by with like 6mm glass on that pretty easy. I personally love the look of a really thick glass on a rimless tank though for some reason. Link to comment
