Cyphastrea problem

I just got a cyphastrea frag in a mail order today. The color looked pretty good, so I thought it was fine initially, but after watching it in my frag tank it looks like the tissue is coming loose. The edges are kind of... blowing in the breeze.

Is it a goner at this point? Or if I put it in an area of very low flow could it reattach?

How much light is it under? Some of them really prefer a shaded spot in the tank.

If the flesh is coming off, it will not reattach. You must either frag past the point of tissue loss into healthy tissue or try using super glue around the edges of tissue loss up to the healthy tissue to attempt to halt the RTN.

+1 Mine does best in the darkest parts of my SPS tank.

The tank is a 20 long lit by a single kessil a150 sky blue. It's off to the side some, same area I keep acans and such. It's literally only been in my tank for an hour or two. I just got the package this morning, so I'm thinking it's from shipping.

Thanks guys, I'll try the superglue.

Put in a lower flow area, and try super glue. If the healthy tissue gets some super glue on it the coral should slime and the glue shouldn't hurt it. Make sure you put it directly in water after the super glue so it hardens right away and the good tissue has a chance to recover.

So I glued it. Between going around the outside and the one spot in the middle that was bare there is hardly anything at this point that isn't glue. It also smelled a little bit. Never noticed an unpleasant odor with any coral before, even when I thought I was losing a micro. I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm guessing it will be going in the trash.

GL with it. IME, cyphestrea do not ship or frag well. I have tried to make frags of mine and they always die. Not sure why as other people have fragged it easily.

I had no idea this was an issue with them. I bought a frag of meteor shower a month or so ago, and other than the base color being pale it's been doing well with very good PE.

Oh no!! :(

At least it was only $10. They sent a freebie too, although not really my taste. Neon green favia I think.

I think it might just be my particular strain of the coral. Who knows though.

Definitely not good if it smells like death. I received a quarter sized chalice frag in the mail once and it stunk up the house instantaneously upon opening the container.. Sorry to hear you lost one. That is always disappointing.

Definitely didn't make it. I was gone for a couple hours earlier and by the time I got back there were pieces of tissue missing in areas where I thought it was still healthy.

One of the chalices looks like it might have something going on too, but not as bad as the cyphastrea. I think I'm done buying coral online for awhile. I placed an order a month or so ago and a couple of the pieces arrived very unhealthy looking. I think that time it was from the heat because that vendor has very good reviews and the other stuff looked great. This time it might have been the cold. Nights down in the 40's. Blah.

Where a lot of folks have great success purchasing coral and livestock online, in the 5 or 6 times I have ordered online the deliveries failed miserably. I don't order online anymore either.

I never used to order online when I lived in southern California because there were stores everywhere, plus a ton of local hobbyists who sold stuff all the time on the San Diego reef board. Here in Pittsburgh though, not so much. The closest dedicated coral shop that I know of is over an hour drive and when I went they still only had pretty basic stuff.

Dang that makes it very tough then.

From what I have heard and read Live Aquaria has an extremely good reputation. I have not ordered from them myself but if I were to order online again it would most definitely be from them. Have you ever purchased from them?

No, I haven't. I've considered it, but whatever I was looking at ordering at the time would have been shipping from multiple facilities and then you get charged multiple shipping fees.

Ya that's another reason I prefer not to order online. Dang shipping fees..

Sorry about your losses! It might be who you ordered from. I've had great experience with reefgardener, coralgardensaquaculture
