Is this a good ebay overflow kit?

It looks awesome. Assuming it doesn't get clogged I would think it should work great. Way better than a traditional horizontal overflow. If you do get it, I would love to hear how it works out.

I am no expert on overflows, but I feel like that one would be way overkill for a 40br.

Have you checked our Glass-holes.com. They are a popular choice. Their 700gph kit would be a great fit for a 40br and is only $80.

Thanks for the responses. I did check some of the glass-hole designs and they were good but the ones I looked at didnt have bulkhead spacing for a beananimal?

I also figured that I can recycle this overflow for my next tank as well if it goes according to plan? All I need is for a high powered return to compensate for its quick draining correct?

???

It will not drain faster than your return pumps. If you return is getting 400GPH in the tank that's what will be overflowing as well.

When you add in everything, glassholes it is more than $80

Why would it be overkill, exactly?

I would love that kind of flow. I have the 700 on my 40 breeder, and could really appreciate the amount of mechanical filtration that thing could do

Its like a Reef Savvy Ghost overflow for half the price, it looks like.

Makes sense. Thanks for correcting me.

Its nice because i contacted the ebay seller and he can modify it for me. Hes gonna cut the teeth to the overflow at an angle for smoother drainage.

Since the bulkheads are 1.5in, should I keep it that way? or ask him to make it 1 inch? I want the ability to put this overflow in my next tank if possible.

I don't think I ran more that 300gph through my sump on my 40b. Dont want much flow through the sump esp if you have a refugium. Then again I had my regugium in the middle chamber and the only control I had was through the overflow. Could put the return in the middle and control the refugium flow seperate. Just my 2 cents.

The overflow in the ebay link looks awesome. I wish I would have seen this before I drilled my tank, I would have picked it up for sure. Good find! Buy it, try it, if you dont like it, resale it to me. :)

My refugium has a separate flow, off a tee.

And ill never put a refugium on any further tanks, its just one big feces catcher and maker.

Any other reason not to have high flow?

I built a special overflow for my next 40 Breeder(last one really, but i cracked it drilling, new one with petco $1 sale). This has me rethinking as well.

From what I've seen, 1" bean animals can handle upwards of 1500gph, so I think 1.5" drains would be way overkill.

Can I just use reducers and make the standpipe 1 inch?

And yeah, it definitely looks like a ghost overflow. Plus the guy can make it fully customizable which is really nice, just send him a message.

I was thinking of having my fuge and skimmer on the sides while I run my return through the middle. The reason why I like the fuge is that I can use it as a "seperated tank" in a way in case hell breaks loose between my inhabitants; plus it would be a good pod source for the mandarin (I hope).

If I do the return in the middle, I suppose I can just use a ball value or gate to limit how much flow goes in there correct? same thing applied to my skimmer side?

Where would my ATO go? in the return pump area?

These guys made me a custom overflow box and their work is awesome.

You don't "need" a reducer. Adjust the flow with a gate valve. Then post some pics!!!!
