jabeuy
I'm gonna be getting an AIO tank, with 4 inches deep back chambers. The total volume will be about 36G, while the display area will be about 30G. Tank will house mostly LPS and some softies, possibly some easier SPS in the not too distant future I've never used a skimmer before, so I wasn't sure what the differences between the Tunze 9001, 9004 and 9002 are. Is it mostly amount of gallons they're rated for? I see a lot of reviews and good impressions of the 9001, probably b/c it's newer. It also has a smaller size and can be nearly invisible in a 13" high tank, so I'm leaning that way. But I'm not too sure if it's enough for my tank's size. I'm looking for something quiet, and can be mostly hidden in a tank 13" high. Any suggestions on which to get? Or maybe even another brand? Link to comment
StevieT
If you can fit the 9004 I would go that route with your size tank. It will stick up about 2.35" past the water level in your rear chamber. If you put it in a chamber that is not an intake then you can virtually hide it under the rim by adjusting the water level. Thanks! Looking at the tunze site, for the 9004 the unit is 12" high, but it also states: "Immersion depth: approx. 225mm to 245mm (8.86 to 9.65 in.)" What is immersion depth? Is that how high the water level must be for it to operate properly? Sorry about the basic questions, I really have no experience with skimmers yet haha. I should probably wait for my tank to get set up and measure water levels, etc. before choosing a skimmer. Link to comment
StevieT
Correct. That is where I came up with my dim on how far it will stick past the water level. The skimmer has a water level it must stay at to work properly. This one is 8.86-9.65". So in your chamber you will have about 9.65" of water below the water level line on the body of the skimmer. The intake grates on the skimmer cup is the water level mark for this unit The 9001 has a 6" immersion depth Link to comment
jabeuy
I see. Thanks a lot! Now I know what to look at when shopping. Link to comment
jimmy_c
When it says "suggest using with a ATO", they mean it. I'm having to jockey mine up and down as the water level changes... Not cool. So now I'm looking at a ATO. Another $100 bucks.. Having said that it does skim well Link to comment
nanolutionary
Unless u want surface skimming go with the 9001, surface skimming on the 9004 which I have is awesome but the other u it it smaller and more quiet. Link to comment

What size tank do you have the 9001 on? I would be right around the limit of what it's rater for. Link to comment
supernip
think about how much room you have in your aio back area, give us an area. I think any of those would be good choices, it just depends on how easily you can get in there for maintenance in my opinion. The biggest aspect for me is whether you have a stable water line, the tunzes are notoriously fussy about that you want to think about: enough room to get hands in there comfortably enough room to not impede flow which chamber it's in/where the water line is realistically how often will you be doing water changes how heavy will you be feeding any other forms of filtration Link to comment
jabeuy
Thanks for the tips supernip. I'm gonna have 3 chambers in the back: 1) Overflow: 10"x4"x13" 2) Middle: 16"x4"x13" 3) Return: 10"x4"x13" I'm gonna wait till the tank is set up and running before picking a skimmer. Link to comment
RollaJase
I can confirm that the 9004 is very fussy on water level. There is a small line on the back of the skimmer indicating the optimum water depth. I have found the skimmer runs best in my tank with the immersion depth slightly deeper then the line on the back of the skimmer. When the water is stable the 9004 skimms very well (I feed heavily), I run mine on a timer to match the light cycle on my DT. Link to comment
supernip
the skimmer will help with your cycle. do you know the baffle arrangement? Do any of those chambers have a constant waterline that's relatively high? Link to comment

But I do know the baffle arrangement. Link to comment
supernip
that's atrocious, who designed it? you better get an ato. You can use any of them in that case, put it in the second chamber and all some macro to catch the micro bubbles. Put a media rack in the first chamber; or a bag of media right under the skimmer in the first chamber. whichever. Actually, put it in the first chamber. The 9004 is supposed to have the best performance. Get that if you can afford it. I would go for the 9002 next because it's so proven and easy to find used; and get a stevieT cup. The price difference doesn't warrant dropping down to a 9001 and you don't have space constrictions. Link to comment

What layout would you suggest? Thanks again for the pointers. I'm coming from running zero filtration (other than live rock), so I'm still a noob lol Link to comment
kalireefer
I like my eshopps nano skimmer, might be a good skimmer for that size of tank. Link to comment
Canadianeh
I am reviving this thread as I would like an update of your decision. I am getting IM Fusion 40 tank, and considering either 9001 or 9004. 9001 is $50 cheaper and it is rated up to 37 gallon. 3 gallon shy from Fusion 40. I'm gonna be getting an AIO tank, with 4 inches deep back chambers. The total volume will be about 36G, while the display area will be about 30G. Hanzel
Neither as they are both crap! Link to comment
WelcomeD
If the water volume is about 36G and with enough space, I would select 9004. Link to comment
Canadianeh
9004 will not fit into Fusion 40 chamber #2 or #4. It can only fir on chamber #1 I am looking for alternative for 9004. did you try 9001 and see if it fits on chamber #2 and #4? Link to comment
reefist
Neither as they are both crap! Please elaborate. Also can you suggest some small skimmers that fit into the IM 40?
