Starting to look like something. I was debating on return pumps, but ended up getting a sicce 3.5 at a price I couldnt turn away. I really like my sicce 1.5, but was thinking of trying out a jeabo DC pump, but I trust the Sicce to perform well, and quietly. It should be in on friday, if thats the case then I'll have it running with fresh this weekend.

I really wanted to use one of the original overflow holes to have a "quick WC" valve. But I was loosing sleep with the idea of a leak, so I couldnt risk it.

I need a few more hose clamps, but its gettin there

Finally looks like a sump!

I tried the plasti dip spray I see everyone raving about, but I really wasnt impressed. the slightest disturbance to it and it would start peeling, so I pulled it all off and went with paint like I usually do.

I'm not 100% sure, I know a few buddies that use that same one and don't have any problems. I went with 3/4" for the return and will have a relatively strong pump, but if it causes a problem I'll ditch that manifold and rebuild, it's only $8 or so in fittings to redo it. I'll let you knoe in a week or so.

Just keep an eye on flow rate with the check valve, the "ball" in them actually can wear out aswell and allow backsiphoning to occur after some time of being beaten with flow as well. I have seen SS ones where the plate (what the ball looks like in a lot of them) turns into swiss cheese in some parts washer systems.

And were wet! With all the connections and DIY shit going on I was expecting several leaks, but I'm yet to find one *knock on wood*

Im going to make an adjustable piece for the overflow box to raise the water level about half an inch, but over all Im smitten with the results

Looks great!! Any pic of the pipes inside the overflow box? Interested too see what your bean animal set up looks like compared to mine

I'm loving the stand, going to try to make something like that for my tank. Did you just use pocket screws and wood glue to put the pieces together? I've only ever built stands framed out of 2x4's, and I know plywood stands will hold up fine but any advice would be appreciated.

Im REALLY impressed with this drain setup, its DEAD silent, and really easy to get running

yes sir, its all kregs and wood glue. the front and both sides are poplar, with the top, bottom and back being ply, but ply would work just as well. Alot of people over build, and theres nothing wrong with that, but its really not necessary. Our tanks really dont weigh that much, and even large tanks will come with crappy particle board stands.

Looks good GA, everything still holding up good? :)

Yes sir, I have ONE leak, and of all places its one of the bulkheads from the original overflow. Its leaking from the oring, not the plumbing, so Im going to try switching out for a different seal and see if that fixes the problem.

Whats up with the middle one and the air line or whatever.... I've seen it before but never really paid that much attention as to its purpose.

Its running as a dorso with literally 1 GPH going down it usually, but if the main drain, that runs as a siphon, gets clogged, and the emergency isnt enough, the water level will get high enough to fill that tube up and make it run as a fill siphon, so there would be two 1" at full siphon worst case scenario.

I didnt, I completely forgot to. So you put it in, then fill the back side with silicone?

Side note, my sump design has one flaw, the baffle between the fuge and return keeps the surface from skimming, and I get this... <_<

Hmmm I like how the piping looks I may have to make mine like that. What plumbing pieces did you get to do that? I just connected two 90' elbows to make each of my drains and my emergency drain is just the 1" pipe.

Ok makes sense. I have the same ? as mpsti above... what parts to make it I too will have 3 drains in the new DT so mind as well right :)

Yeah just takes a small bead of silicone to fill it in nicely without seeping out all over the place

Each drain is a 1" T, with a 2" piece of pipe up top with a cap, and a cut down 90 off the side. I cut down the 90s, but the slicker version would be a "street 90" which has a male 1" portion on one side so itll sit in flusher to the body of the T

The dorso is a screw in 90" 1/4" NPT fitting. I drilled out the cap and then used PVC glue from below to make sure it was sealed up. I wanted it to look alittle better than the piece of airline tubing I was seeing elsewhere.

I really dig the Bean animal man, its more plumbing than a dorso or a herbie, but ive tried to make it fail and havent succeded yet, and you cant hear anything but the small trickle of the water from the skimmer box up top, and nothing from down in the sump.

Ill switch out that bulkhead seal tomorrow and do the silicone aswell

Yea, its shitty. I wanted to make sure the water didnt just flow up top of that section, but it looks like that "flow under" baffle has to go.

Sounds good, I may have to modify mine a bit, any issues when you kill the power with the main drain getting the full siphon going?

Yeah I have only heard good things about it really, I've half looked into it. I've always just ran 2 drains but the new tank is coming with 3 so seems like a no brainer really.

Could you add another flow over baffle instead of removing the flow under baffle? I guess it'd be the same as removing it tho really but if your getting that much foam still you might want the extra couple baffles...

I have im afraid to say, I THINK it might have to do with my full siphon being quite a bit below the dorso drain, Ive just been pulling the cap off the siphon and letting it burp and its going in 15 seconds, but im hoping to get it worked out to avoid having to do that.

*EDIT: I just read up and it looks like the heights of the pipes is my issue, Ill mess with it tomorrow and report back

Awesome thanks man! :)

the foams built up over 4 or five days, I dont know if itd be that much of a problem, but ive got to work something out. it mainly seems to come from a lack of skimming on that portion

Yeah personally I think I would just add another baffle, seems like it would do better then removing the flow under baffle. I could be wrong but just seems like it would do a little better since it would be flowing over twice instead of just the one time.

A pile of cheap Merican beer made my razors edge mind dull  your saying a flow over BEFORE the flow under that aught to fix it easily.

I don't know what I'm sayin right now to be honest... I just looked at your pic again and it looks like you have a flow over (where the water flows over the top of the baffle) in place now... and I'm only eating cereal LOL

Ok looking at it deeper I would say add a flow under (where the baffle is raised of the bottom of the sump) after what is in place now (to me would be considered a flow over). you will likely still get the foam but it will be trapped between the 2 baffles.

Lol! In that pic water is flowing from the left section over into the fuge, then under baffle 1 and over baffle 2, my current proposition is a baffel, lets call it baffle 3, that will skim the surface before it goes under #1

I dunno man, this whole situation is quite baffling right now . I'm sure with your magical powers (and having it there infront of you) you can see the flaw better then I am over thinking it lol Its been a long day, I'm callin it a night man. If you're still trying to figure it out tomorrow let me know and I will look through more of the pics of the sump (hopefully with a sharper mind) and see if I can figure something out..... right now I don't even see why your getting the foam at 1gph..... I run considerably more, have a huge skimmer and 2 baffles total w/0 foam or bubbles outside of the 1st chamber, and all my sumps have been like that

Alright fellas, I've got my plumbing done for now, up sized the barb fitting into the return manifold to a true 3/4" and it really upped the flow on the return, I am defiantly going to have to turn it down some when I switch over.

The sicce 3.0 is a beast, very little noise and does not seem to be effected by the height or manifold much. I'm busier than hell right now, but hope to switch over next week. The ATI light I'm using now is great, I much prefer it to the mh, as much as that hurts to say after years of sticking to my mh.

Also got my first new coral in a while, went to get 1' of 3/4" vinyl hose and came home with a chalice and a free piece of hose :D
