Snow_Phoenix
Can we use unused dry rock for a freshwater tank - more specifically, a cichlid tank? Honestly I didn't know whether to post this on a salty forum or freshie forum so I'm trying my luck on both sides so that someone might be able to respond. Link to comment
Tamberav
If it is texas holy rock. It is fine but is dense. Link to comment
PaulBuxton
I would think it depends on the rock. You could give the rock a good boiling first and then leave it in some freshwater and monitor what it does with the water chemistry. If it doesn't change anything then you are probably fine. I think any minerals that are harmful to freshwater would also be harmful to saltwater. Although I can recommend Dragon Rock as a nice decoration for a freshwater tank. Link to comment

Caleb_1
I personally use old dry rock rubble in my African cichlid sump. Its good stuff. Works well once its been rinsed but even the salt and minerals it will leech will be beneficial in an African system (to a degree). Link to comment
lynxer
ALOT of LFS stores carry texas holey rock. Ive seen it used as base rock in reef tanks, and it makes for a BEA-u-tiful African tank. Realatively cheap around here (sub$2.50lb) List your live rock locally, im sure someone will snag it up.. and fund your holey rock venture? Link to comment
