noob question about coralline algae

What are the benefits of coralline algae? Is it simply to compete against other forms of algae (ie hair, cyano, etc?).

My tank has been up and running for just over a month. JBJ 28g nanocube intermediate LED. approx 30lbs figi LR. No real noticeable coralline algae growth yet.

any insight appreciated!

It doesn't really compete for the same nutrients, but it does discourage growth of algae on the rock. Also, most people find that it looks better than uncovered rock. If the conditions for coral growth are good, you normally get coralline algae growth as well. However, it will consume the same elements as your stony corals (and you might need to start dosing two part to compensate). It also reduces the porosity of the rock.
