    • no, no real difference

I have a photon 24 with 90* optics suspended roughly a foot over a 40b, I get excellent coverage and don't notice any spotlighting/disco.. I only ask because the trend seems to be away from using any optics unless it's on an uber deep tank.. best I can tell, the thought is that with optics you get "hot spots" and harsh/uneven lighting for the coral..

any other benefits to taking the optics off? I'm considering trying it for a while and seeing what happens but thought I'd ask everyone's opinions before givin it a go.. I'll obviously need to lower the fixture down if I remove them, that's not a problem (though I do like having the extra head room)..

Thanks....

As long as the optics are not scorching the corals, or creating visual effects that you don't care for, then I would leave well enough alone.

Do the photon series ship with 90 deg as standard? Reason I ask is because I ordered 120 (no optics), yet my light came with what looks like optics on them...

I'm not really sure, I think they also have 120 degree secondary optics.. the reason I say that is because they claim they put 120 optics on the reds regardless of what optics you order, and there are secondary optics on my reds.. however I can't tell much if any difference in the light spread between the reds and other colors if I hold a white card up close to the light..

That's a good point, because the reds have optics on them too. But if I look at the optics for the red LEDs, they look slightly different from the rest.

Anyway, sorry I can't help with your dilemma! :P

but does the light disperse differently? I'm just curious what advantages there are to running no optics closer to the water vs 90* optics higher off the water.. less shadows/shading maybe?

There will be a change in the dispersion pattern, but it's probably not going to be something that you will notice. It's not going to drastically change the shadowing in the tank.

Okie doke.. thanks evil..

Velcro a sheet of diffusion screen to bottom of the light seems like an easy project.
I would think it would do better sitting on top of my tank netting
