I bought this tank used. As you can see it still needs a lot of work. It is covered with GHA and Aptasia. When I picked it up, the owner said that he had tons of feather dusters, which is really the aptasia. So my plans are to remove the GHA and the aptasia. Add some LPS and Possibly some SPS near the top.

Lol. You guys are killing me. Yes I know the glass needs cleaning. It's driving me nuts not being able to clean it. I did add more rock but I don't know if I like it. Pics coming soon.

So thought about taking one of my plastic scraper blades and heating it up and forming it to the curve of the tank. This algae is going to take more than a mag scraper. Some elbow grease will be required.

Get a razor blade, heat it up stick it in something plastic, voila.

I know that but really dont wanna stick my hand down in the tank. Just might have to.

For the initial scraping to get everything off of it you'll pretty much need to. Get a nice blade and scrape the glass (it will feel perfectly smooth to your hand) and then from there you can use a magnetic scraper or a soft sponge like a magic eraser to keep it clean, but if you let it build up again you'll need to keep scraping it.

I would get a large Rubbermaid trashcan from lowes/homedepot/walmart and put the rock, water and fish in it with the return pump from the cube for a few hours while you clean the tank out. Get new sand, the old stuff is probably nasty. Soak the tank in plain old white vinegar and a plastic credit card used as a scraper (and not scratch anything). The vinegar will dissolve all the old deposits and kill most algae's without any harm to the tank. Rinse it out when finished with water, return the rock, fish, new sand, etc. Voila ...like new with no cycle.

Should be getting my WP-10 Wednesday. So looking forward to having that as an addion to my setup. I've owned a wp-25 and had it in a 29g and it was to much for that size of tank.

What does all the biocube owners suggest upgrading first? lighting? Return pump? Media basket? Skimmer?

Went ahead and scraped it by hand! Looks tons better. It was driving me crazy.

Knew that I would get harassed about the tang. Its a temporary thing. I call it INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT or IPM.

I have a lot and I mean a lot of GHA. Instead of peroxide or other chemicals I use what nature uses to control pest. Once the GHA is under control and I can control it by pulling out the extra nutrients the Tang is gone. The Tang is a loaner and will go to its rightful owner once the GHA is under control.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a few more pics tonight. Did some moving around on the rock work and added a few more items. Got a Christmas Favia, some other favia (unknown) Green Cap Monti, orange mushroom and some zoanthids. My GHA is disappearing so its time to remove the tang in the next week or so. Have just a little bit on top of my shelf rock.
