Well, 'scapes are so subjective for each individual, and also depend on what/ how many corals are used on them, that I can't decide which looks best...I almost want to say number three... ;)

But I did just pick one of these tanks up myself, and I am quite impressed by their build quality (at least the one in my possession) so far.

Not sure how I am going to light it yet (maybe a Par38 since I still have a few laying around), but I did also get the Ghost skimmer for it, and I also plan on using a KN240 for additional flow as well - thinking about a small pair of skunk clowns and anemone in it. Got a ton of dry rock, so I am planning something for a 'scape too - always the fun part!

Good luck!

You know, when i first got into this last January I spent hours mulling over different scapes for my tank and drawing plans, etc. With my current build I just threw in several chunks of dry rock in about 20 minutes and was done with it and If anyone says something like "yeah, it looks like it" i'll take them up to 15,000 feet, open the door and ask them again how it looks LOL.

Anyway, over the last few months i've been looking at some of the more experienced members tanks and noticed an interesting commonality. The rock scapes can be clearly seen when the tanks are new but as they mature, the rocks seem to disappear into a sea of colorful coral.

So my attitude now is to scape only as a good platform for the coral and not worry too much about how the scape itself looks.

Take it for what it's worth. AVIATOR.

I like scape number 2. Plenty of room for swimming and for corals to grow. And I like arches. Fish look so cute swimming through them! I'll be following for sure, since you're sure to do something cool with all this thought put into it.

While I really like 3 as it is the strongest for coral placement I have to say its going to be tight to the glass and hard to clean around if you want a traditional 3 viewing sides scape 1 probably has the most potential to place taller corals/gorgs/macros as will also be the easiest to get flow right and make cleaning with a magnet a breeze.

Also in regards to this thought, once you look at rock like FW uses sloping subtrate you realize corals are the true hardscape of the aquarium. The rocks are just there to provide elevation changes in coral placement.

Yeah, rock really is only a coral platform, but I want enough room for corals and I'd prefer to have multiple levels.

Totally following this!

Thanks :D

Yeah, the 3rd one I like, but it would be hard to keep it clean and get at the corals on the inside of the towers. I also don't think the sand would stay that way for long.

I may do a hybrid of 1 and 2.

Following!

I vote for one or two. I normally like the island look, but I think this tank might be kind of small for it. I was lurking in your other thread for awhile, but never posted. I saw in there you were going to build a stand for this one. Have you started?

I agree, I think. I may use 1 and 2 and come up with a design based on those.

Thanks for following along. I have designed the stand but haven't started building it yet. I'm going to draw it up cleanly and put it on here. It's pretty basic.

Still no tank arrival... I sent IM an email asking what was going on. If my 5g wasn't giving out, and was still structurally intact, I wouldn't worry about it. But that's not the case. It'll probably be almost a week to get the tank to me from MD when it ships, so now... Bah.

My light came... Will post pictures shortly. It's unreal how amazing it turned out.

I like the last one but is there any way for the rocks to be slightly lower? I would just be worried about useable space for corals toward the top.

Still no shipment of the tank. I DID get in the sand, the light and the heater, though. I've updated the first post with a list of stuff, plus the updated rockscape.

Oh wow, do I feel (hmmm, what's the word...) stupid!

You are correct - I was looking at it backwards, and have little excuse - have been without significant sleep since the weekend with my 6-year-old in the hospital briefly with a staph infection in his foot. I only had a brief chance to look at it in the office before I had to leave, but will take the time to get it right when I go back in to the office tomorrow.

Sorry for the confusion... :wacko::blush:

Previous post edited so that I don't foster any further confusion...

No problem. Hope the little one gets better soon! (I love Staph, as I studied it in grad school, but I don't like Staph infections). What antibiotics are they using?

Thanks, he has gotten surprisingly and significantly better, which is why I attempted to come on here for a bit.

The small wound he had on his foot (from a water park visit last week) was fine for a couple of days, but then got much worse seemingly overnight. I don't know what he was given specifically at the hospital, but he has been on oral Trimet-Sulfamethoxazole 2x daily along with 2% Mupirocin ointment 4x daily with the dressing change. The wound was cleaned extensively yesterday, and it is amazing how much better it now looks. He has mild cerebral palsy, and has previously given us scares, but I am getting too old for this!

Thanks for the understanding and kind words, and I am sorry to clog up the thread...

My best wishes for your little man, I recently got an infection from a cut on my foot that seemingly got really jacked up overnight. Took it like 2-3 weeks to heal. Me being me just loaded up on some topical antibiotics, alcohol swabs and bandages but if I saw that on either of my boys I would have been in the ER that night.

you aren't clogging up my thread at all! This is what I love most even more than my wife and aquariums... Medical microbiology.

As for Staph, it grows very quickly. Doesn't sound like MRSA which is good. Is the cut on a foot affected by CP, and if so does that affect his pain sensation in that foot?

As for the infection, just do as the doctor says. BUT, if he starts to become flu-like (lethargic, aches, nauseated - not just a sniffle) and/or gets a sudden high fever, you take him to the ER immediately and tell them about the infection. No waiting. It is uncommon so I don't want to scare you, but be aware that Staph can cause some REALLY bad infections.

Thank you for the well wishes, and that is exactly as we did - took him to the ER at night...

Well, that is very gracious of you, and I am a biologist by profession, but not a microbiologist, so I know just enough to be dangerous. The infection is on his weaker foot, but is quickly healing - new pink tissue and the swelling is almost gone. He is also able to bend it without pain. They suspected MRSA, but it appears we got lucky.

I teach a class in Zoonotic Disease, so I am well aware of how bad staph infections can be (also had a bad infection in my elbow way back in grad school), which is why I have been a bit stressed out over his illness. He is such a sweet kid and a fighter, and is quite used to hospitals, but is now becoming leery of them, so he was scared this time too... :(

I still have no tank from MD because they still haven't gotten their shipment from IM... I'm not very happy right now, especially because my 5g pico is starting to fail. That's why I upgraded, right? I may have to resort to buckets...

I was looking at the IM website today to see if they were even remotely close to MD to see how long it should take once they send the tanks to MD (I already was told by IM that they were sending the tanks on Tuesday), and ran across their warranty information. They state that the warranty, to be effective, must be submitted within 14 days of purchase. I'm 10 days out from ordering and still have no tank, so I will not have it in time for this 14 day thing. I have emailed them asking if it's purchase or arrival that they really mean.

I'm still seeing lots of IM tank leak problems, where the leak starts out of a seam or something on the bottom. I'm hoping that when this tank does arrive (if ever...), that there will be no problems.

For what it's worth tibbsy, I had a nuvo 24 that failed, then got the 30L. The seams on the 30L are awesome! I was impressed with it so much, I picked up the fusion 10 too. If it's built like the 30L, we should have no problems with leaking.

Yeah, I have to second this - the seams on the Nuvo 10 and 20 seem to be robust. I think most of the leak issues were with the previous rounded-corner Nuvo 8/16/24's (again, rounded panels have had issues with other companies too), and these latest are too new yet to make any determination. I do like their overall panel alignment too - I happened to take a look at both the Nuvo 10 and 20 next to one of the Marineland frameless cubes at a LFS, and the differences were very obvious.

I did not even check the warranty, but 2 weeks does seem unnecessarily short - maybe too many warranty issues with the previous models have hurt their bottom line? I did purchase my Nuvo 10 (now up and running ;) ) from a LFS, and the owner stands behind products more so than the manufacturers, but I hope I never have to report anything... -_-
