Carebearcatz Posted September 1, 2014 Share Posted September 1, 2014 Ok, so I just set up a zero-equipment vase/jar (I keep calling it a jar since jarquarium is a pretty nifty little phrase to describe this work of art/experiment). This jar-periment was inspired by new-b-reefers thread http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/344145-my-super-low-tech-reef-jarquariums-with-diy-pj-reef If you haven't read it, it's pretty inspiring and incredible, I'm excited to see what I'm able to keep alive in such harsh conditions. I'm planning on having this jar be a safe-haven for experimentation and for unwanted cool hitchhikers and weedy coral. To begin it, I bought the vase at a thrift store for a buck and a rock with 4+ different types of macro algae for $10. The rock I acquired also has tons of featherdusters (I counted 12 just looking at it from one side), a brittle star, bristle worms, copepods and probably many other critters I have yet to spot. I plan on adding a couple of mushrooms and some hardy zoas/pallys from my nano next week. Also if anybody knows how to make these pictures upright I'd appreciate the technical support. They were upright on my computer so don't know where I went wrong. :/ Link to comment

I'm very excited to start out this jar. Although I have a feeling I'm going to be messing with it too much for it to be a very good experiment. It's probably going to be moved quite frequently as where I want to place it, is not the best place to look at it. Should help with flow though xD Link to comment

On Friday, I had the chance to see the brittle star out in plain sight so I snapped a few cell phone pics. I also added a few live brine shrimp to the vase. I watched the brittle star promptly the devour one of the dead brine shrimp that I inadvertently scooped up. Here's pics my mini-brittle stars and wierd jelly worm thing Link to comment

Kind of worried about winter though. Currently it's fairly warm but we don't turn on the heater a lot so.... Gonna see if heating it with a lamp will work xD if it's still running well in Late November going to be making a lot of Xmas jars since my friends and family really like it. I'd personally stay away from any stony corals Bc I feel like they'd deplete the calcium quickly so unless you dosing or doing frequent water changes I think it'd die. I've had mine going for almost 3 weeks and yet to do a water change or see any real reason to do one. I'm honestly worried about doing it Bc I'm scared of killing things or getting stung by the bristle worm. I've been feeding once a week. Link to comment

Hmm I'll find the link but there are several ppl who have similar size and shape jars with sps in them and some Acans etc. they don't necessarily need a lot of calcium and if it gets low they just grow slower health becomes an issue when they can't get enough to regenerate themselves. I'd add sps but something hardy if I did something similar. Link to comment

Didn't know that you could keep sps in these D: Honestly tried looking around for more examples of jar tanks and had a hard time finding many of them.
