RC1313
Hey everyone, just got back from an awesome MACNA with a sweet new crocea clam. I drip acclimated for an hour last night, removed one pyramid snail and put the clam at the bottom of my tank. Last night it seemed the clam was acclimating great. This morning, it is barely open, and my cleaner shrimp was digging in it. I'm not sure if the clam is still acclimating to the light (it's a reefbreeders value led about 1 inch off the waters surface but turned all the way down). Or if I should move it into the rocks. I also am running GFO and carbon I read I should remove those, true? I'd be more than happy to post a pic as well if needed or am I just freaking out over a normal acclimation? Thanks! metrokat
Cleaner shrimp digging could be the reason it won't open. If you have a 1ltr soda bottle you can cut off the bottom, make holes for water flow and use it to protect the clam from the cleaner. See if that helps. Pyramid snails are bad news. Link to comment

I might just remove the cleaner too. I only saw the one snail but it was right on the foot of the clam. Sixlines take care of these if I see more? Do you think I should put some zooplankton in the tank or eliminate the shrimp variable first? Link to comment
basser1
Wait 'til the lights go out and use a flashlight to see if you can spot more snails. This when they are more active. A pic would also be nice to see.... Link to comment
RC1313
Pyramid snail Also looks like there's a couple aptaisia someone tried to superglue over.. Link to comment
metrokat
I hope the clam recovers for you but, retracted flesh like that is usually a sign that it is too late. I'm sorry. Which vendor was this clam from? Link to comment

Which vendor was this clam from? ugh. I don't remember except his name was josh and the clam was 100$ off. Is there anything I can do besides wait? Link to comment
ZephNYC
This clam is dead and your cleaner is trying to eat the rotting flesh. Sorry. Link to comment

Besides not buying it/checking for the snail before I bought it? I hope the clam recovers for you but, retracted flesh like that is usually a sign that it is too late. I'm sorry. Which vendor was this clam from? I looked on the floor plan and bank statement. It was ocean paradise in ND Link to comment
RC1313
Also the shrimp hasn't been messing with it for a while. Because it's fully dead? Link to comment
metrokat
It's not fully dead, it's still alive, the shrimp will be back. Link to comment
ZephNYC
It only lasted one day, so unless you did something extremely abusive to it, lol, and I'm sure you did not, it was pretty much dead already when you purchased it. The frustrating thing about clams is they can be one day away from dropping dead, and display perfectly. This is why I don't buy clams from most vendors. Always check underneath a clam if u have the chance. A healthy clam will have nice flesh protruding out. A bad clam will have a gaping hole you can see into. Cleaners don't pick at clams until they give off the stench of rotting flesh. This is proof your clam is at least half dead. Link to comment

It's a gorgeous thing too. Thank you guys for the advice. Should I leave it in the tank on the off chance it lives or just take it out? Link to comment
basser1
If it were me.... I'd take it out. I wouldn't want to run the chance of it fouling my tank. Link to comment
sangheili
Was it open like normal when you bought it? Or retracted like that? The $100 off makes me wonder if the vendor knew it was dying and just tried to pull a fast one on you. My 6" maxima looked just like that one (before dead) and just died on me last night. I question if this batch of clams has issues. Probably all from the same farm. Link to comment

And it was big and colorful, that's why my 13 year old brother picked it. Now he hates me because it's dying Link to comment

That clam has a lot of meat in it and can be a huge bioload to your tank. If the shrimp was picking at it's meat - it's dead. Sorry man Link to comment

sangheili
When I went to grab it the flesh reacted and retracted farther and the shell shut... Hmm. You may have the only clam in history that recovers from looking like that. I really hope so! Do your best to leave it alone as it's likely stressed beyond belief. Link to comment
Angeles
Just do something to protect it from the shrimp, then see if it recovers… Be careful, if it dies, it could cause a crash. Link to comment
RC1313
I ended up taking it out last night because I didn't want to crash my tank. Thank you all for the help. I will not be attempting a clam again for a long long time Link to comment

RC1313
Dang, sorry about the clam I don't think thats a Pyramid snail though??? Thanks. It was a beauty but I suppose it happens. I did get a phantom clown for 40 that's thriving in qt haha It was attached to the foot of the clam so I automatically assumed pyramid. The guy emailed me back today and there was no guarantee on the clam which I expected. Just a sucky deal Link to comment
