what made my clowns jump out?

I have a 30xhigh. I had one clown in it. I had two but the other one has been in the basement in a frag tank for some time due to being an @$^hole... So last thursday I come home from work and my clown is gone from my display. I find him dried up underneath my tank... I was pretty bummed considering I have had him/her for about 7 years. So I took my other clown from my frag tank and put it in the display. I probably should have thought about this more, but that's hindsight I guess.. He jumped out last night and I found him dried up behind the tank. He was about 8 years old.................

Also in the tank,

yellow watchman goby

peppermint shrimp

snails

hermits

The shrimp has been showing his face more than usual lately, I used to not see him for days. I would see him around feeding time then he would disappear.

What could have scared my fishes in the middle of the night to make them jump? I feel like it might be the shrimp, But then I watch how slow he is while getting food, it's like he's blind.... I might be ranting right now but anyways,,, thoughts? thanks

Do you not have a lid? A lot of fish, damsels included, have a tendency to jump out of tanks. It can be stress, or boredom, or simply wanting to reach a destination outside the tank, etc. That's why lids, even if it's just mesh ones, are recommended.

I have a glass top. I have an opening about 1 inch wide, 8 inches long... I'll have to put mesh over that now I guess before I find some new fish.

They are fish. They will jump. Nothing necessarily makes them do it other than the fact that they are fish and will jump out of water expecting to always land back in water.

Maybe I'm paranoid. Just two old fish jumping out within a week made me think something scared them in the middle of the night.

Does your lighting switch on and off without any dimming? Anecdotally, I've noticed that almost all the times I've seen fish jump were when the lights switched off or on.

On a side note, sweet Z in your signature. I used to have a 91 TT that I modded up to around 500HP. Still miss it but have an 08 G35S now which is a good compromise for a sedan...

Thanks man. My mom has a G sedan, neat cars.....

My lights dim every hour slightly, so it's kind of a progression it doesn't just shut right off.

I walked by at night and found my peppermint shrimp upside down at the top of the water eating something off of the overflow for my HOB filter. So I'm thinking maybe he touched my clowns while they were sleeping and freaked them out? I tested for stray voltage and covered the holes in my top with eggcrate..... SOOOOOO I bought some black extremes and we'll see how it goes... so far so good.
