Canister filter with lily pipes, I love that clean look on such a small tank. I know people tend to bash canisters, but if you keep up regular maintenance, they're great.

I have wp-10 and a pump. But those things are not filtration.

I thought circulation was part of filtration? Being genuine, just trying to grasp info.

Personally if I'm going to bother to place equipment in a tank, like a powerhead or pump, I'd just as soon use something for mechanical filtration instead. With a HOB skimmer/filter or canister, you're getting the circulation and mechanical filtration all in one for a small sized tank.

But that's just my take on it!

Everyone seems to love the aquaclear idea and I think it is pretty good, but I put this HOB Fuge on my tank. My buddy did the setup and I copied off him. The parts cost about $30 so its cheaper than an AC. The link to the box is below. Then just search ebay for a small powerhead to add onto the intake hose for more flow. And a cheap clip on led from ebay to put chaeto in too.Check it out if interested in the fuge idea. Adds 1/2 gal to the tank also. I put the divider in and live rock rubble in half chaeto in other half.

Just get an ac50 throw some chemipure and floss and a wp10 for flow and call it done

Don't mess with those other breeder boxes and stuff waste of time and money

Do any Aquaclear filter that firs in your budget vrom the AC20 & up, just get the InTank basket. I own the 20, 30, 50 & 70, all with InTank baskets, works great & cheap as i got all of these filters used!

Unless you're starting up a sandstorm and irritating everything, there's no such thing as too much flow. 8D

But on a serious note, start off with both items set as low as they'll go and increase from there. With both on the lowest settings, you probably won't have a storm going. To bring flow up, I'd start with the AC70 first for better filtration, and if you can turn that up until you're happy with filtration turnover, feel free to start turning up the MP10.

will the flow thru the AC70 be to fast for the chemipure an/or purigen to work properly ? or will I need to use a 50 impellor or trim the 70 down ?

I would like to go as big as possible for the HOB. so preferring the 70 over 50.

No, it won't be too fast. There really isn't such a thing when it comes to filtration media, unless your circulation is so high that the media bags are being ripped open (not gonna happen). The impeller modification is done for refugiums, to moderate the flow going through a patch of chaeto, for example. Definitely go as big as possible.

I like the canister idea for this as well. Keeps the tank much cleaner looking.

You could also do a horizontal overflow and plumb a sump into it. That would be the best option IMO.

I did the fluval 106 before, i had no issues with nitrates & phosphates when doing a cleaning once a week w/wc but i was happier doing two ac's as it was less of a pita and from a look standpoint too, surface skimmer on one, no extension on the other but that of course is just my opinion.

not into the canister thing. just seems like to much hassle to clean regularly. this tank will be in bedroom so simpler cleaning is best option.

If you can find a way to make a sump silent enough, I'd say go for that. Sumps are magical volume-adding beauties and I want to set up a pico tank just to have a sump, but that's not in my near future right now.

If not, a HOB filter that'll allow you to quickly switch out media/floss would be a great choice. Look at the different models, because while you don't want completely still surface water you also don't want a huge waterfall (splashing noises, salt creep, etc). Something close to the water line, with a wide output that sinks below the surface so that water glides in, instead of splashing in.
