cindyp
hello! i love your tank and i love what you're doing! i'm in SD too. i was just reading up on the asterina star causing hell in people's tanks. and that does look like it to me. but i'm a noob. but make sure you can get an ID, cause they sound bad! love your fish too! i recently upgraded from a 3g pico to an 8g. and my end goal is a flower rock anemone and one or two tiny fish. charnelhouse
cindyp: Greetings to a fellow San Diegan! It's cool to find a local here. Thank you for the kind words From what I have been able to discover about the Asterina Star, there are numerous different species of them and only about 5% are hazardous to corals. The other risk with them is rapid reproduction. I considered taking it out when I saw it, but in the end decided I didn't want to nuke the only hitchhiker I've found in the tank... haha. I'm just going to pray for it not to turn into a nuisance or coral danger. Link to comment
cindyp
i hope it's a friendly one then! i got a few new corals from AW and got a hitchhiking mini brittle star fish. so was very pleased by that. it lives around my gsp. i'm waiting a week or two at least before i add fish. leaning toward green banded goby right now--or some kind of goby. someone else also recommended "stubby clowns" which made me laugh. was looking into them last night. they are like small clownfish that won't grow big? charnelhouse
Haha.. Stubby Clowns, that's funny. I wonder if they were talking about clown gobies? There are 5 or 6 different varieties (Citron Goby being the largest). I know some breeds of the percula/ocellaris clowns are smaller than others, but I don't know that much about them. Igreen's Fish Guide doesn't recommend clowns of any sort in anything under 10 gallons, which is why I went with the Citron Goby. My daughter wanted a "Nemo" pretty bad but I convinced her this was a better choice. She loves Details (the Citron) now and is completely happy with the choice . Planning on some corals this weekend, I'll post pics when they are in. Link to comment
cindyp
from what i understand, the stubby clowns are a mutation so are a lot smaller than your normal clowns. the normal clownfish adults do get too big for my 8g--which is really 6g of tank space. will do more research and window shopping soon! charnelhouse
Picked up an API Reef Master Test Kit Friday and ran all the tests: SG - 1.025 Amm - 0 NO2 - 0 NO3 - 5 ppm PO4 - 0 KH - 10 Ca - 480 Temp - 82 Based on those results I took the plunge yesterday and picked up 6 frags at my LFS. I'm going to retire this beginner thread and link to it in a Members Tanks thread from here out. Thanks to all for the tips and comments! Link to comment

Mariaface
Nice! You'll probably want better test kits for alk, cal, and mag down the line. So long as you're picking up decently basic frags and testing often, though, you should be good. Good luck! :] Link to comment
