Neodymium magnet question

Epoxied, pre epoxied, neodymium magnets rust, so Ive found out.

Frag disk makers embed them inside disc material safely. Which are most likely more porous than reef epoxy.

My question is about the aquamend type epoxy used for mounting frags and gluing live rock.

If a neodymium magnet is encapsulated in reef epoxy will they rust? Has anyone tried this before and had them split from oxidation?

There are ones coated in plastic that won't rust. The epoxy and rubber coated ones aren't good at all though. The rubber deteriorates and the epoxy is extremely brittle.

Other thing you could probably do is figure out how to coat them completely in silicon. That should create an impenetrable layer around it and it is clear so you will be able to see if it starts oxidizing anywhere. I personally wouldn't use an epoxy stick because it would be very difficult to make it completely water tight.

The metallic coating has quite a bit of copper in it so I wouldn't want to allow them to rust in the tank for a long time in case the copper is soluble.

Good idea

Look for the Paulin brand, they have multiple sizes & you get 8 magnets for $2.99. I used them for my custom frag racks, they have been in the tank for 8'months straight with no sign of discolouration or rust.
