Yellow tang minimum tank size

Hi everybody, as the title suggest, I was wondering the minimum tank size of a baby yellow tang about 1 1/2" in diameter.

And how fast do they grow in inch(es)/year p. Thanks!

The tank itself has to be at least 4 feet long but it is definitely recommended to be longer. For example, an 100 gallon tank is normally 6 feet long.

40 gallons would probably be fine while they're small.

If it's a short period of time a smaller tank than recommended should be okay. Many people quarantine fish for a month in much smaller tanks than they require to live in.

I have one in my 40b (36" tank), fine so far.. it's not an adult but it's also far from "tiny"... the fish doesn't act stressed or anything, and it also doesn't pace or act confined.. it is pretty shy though which is odd, but as long as I don't startle him, he seems pretty happy.. mostly hangs out with my clowns.. occasionally breaks up fights caused by my sixline.. if I notice him getting too large or acting confined I'll sell/give/trade him to a local with a larger tank.. but so far so good..

Like stated above. For only a small period of time should you put it inside a smaller tank. If you are looking to keep it for the rest of its life, I would go with a 100g minimum.

Hi ghill just visited your thread your set up is really nice! I plan on setting up a JBJ 45 gal however the dimensions are only 26.5x21x19...So I suppose with all the given insight a baby yellow tang won't work :(

If you have your heart set on a tang, I would recommend a smaller tang like a tomini or kole. The tomini's max size is only 6 inches so I would expect a juvi raised in captivity to not even reach 6 inches.

If you just want an open water swimmer that is electric yellow, then a yellow coris wrasse would fit the bill.

Anyone happen to know a baby Flame Angel is suitable in a 45G? Really love just how the fishes colors pop! :D

LOL that is absolutely terrible! I'd feel too bad if my tang got that big in a small set up like that :|

I've seen flame angels in waaay smaller tanks than a 45g and they live happy for a really long time. So I dont see an issue there.

yeah, those aren't the best dimensions for a tang, but like others have said if you are okay with giving it to someone with a larger tank it will work for a while..

Cool I'll look into it Tamb! However I might still have my eyes set on my yellow tang ans then eventually give it back to my LFS after it's grown too big.. But I'll definitely keep this is mind.

I think a 1.5" yellow tang would be perfectly fine in my 20L.

Realistically it would be okay as a temporary tank, like if that's your QT size etc. Otherwise I'd look into a 75G at minimum. Flame angel would be just fine in a 45G.

Thanks Halo, appreciate your feedback. I'm definitely getting a flame angel soon as I finish with my cycle. Also, I'm starting to sway towards a baby yellow tang now with everyone's insight on it being a temporary thing...however my only dilemma is how fast they grow/year because I don't plan on upgrading until possible 1.5-2 years from now..I don't want them to be cooped up in my tank as an already adult size fish after only one year :(

I've got a tomini in my 29 gal and he is about 3 inches and is fat, active, and healthy. I don't plan to keep him in this tank forever though. Currently planning to upgrade to a 120 gal next year. I definitely think its better to get a smaller type of tang for tanks around 100 gals (tomini and kole for example), but this is more for aesthetics. Putting a decently large fish in a medium sized tank makes the tank look smaller. As for the tang police, don't get them started. The emotions will run wild and opinions will be written in all caps. Just use common sense and do research on the fish. No one likes to see a fish that is visibly unhealthy.

Sometimes my juvi tang (2.5 inches) beats up my angel in the 45g. I think sometimes tangs can be bastards in confined spaces as they like having territory. Something to keep an eye on if you get both as they have similar feeding habits and shape. No one is allowed to touch the nori until the tang is finished. My angel hates any new fish so plan accordingly.

I want to say they grow about an inch per year.

This is very true. When I place nori in the tank, my tomini will guard it and harass any that get near it. Even the pylei wrasse that is just curious. My tang absolutely hates my sailfin blenny. If the blenny is seen around any algae sources, the tang is hysterical. Its kind of comical. The blenny is small enough, it just moves into a crevice and keeps on eating, poking its little head out. Blennies are a must have. Just so much character in such a small package. Its like owning a pug, so ugly its cute.

+1 flame angel

+1 yellow coris wrasse

I have both in my 29gal biocube. They do not seem cramped, but they are both still very small. I might end up having to trade/give/sell the angel and coris as they get bigger. Also, flame angels will do better with rocks to swim in and out of/graze on. I have a huge cave in my biocube that my angel seems perfectly contempt with.

Personally if your going to do a reef tank I would skip the flame.... and any other angel. Most people that think theirs don't nip are in denial.... its ok I was one of those people for years lol

Great point on bigger fish making a tank look smaller... To be honest I'm probably going to shoot for one or the other... Any idea if it is majority tangs that get defensive with the nori? Or if it's hit or miss.

I've taken into consideration a Bicolor Blenny! Saw one at my LFS and fell in love with how they just reverse park themselves into the holes of the rock work... I plan on getting Pukani rock so good thing it's very porous for them to park in. :)

Thanks for the advice, here's a pic of my aquascape that I plan on mimicking in my 45G
