What is it an indication of when zoanthids spread far apart?

My zoanthids and other polyps don't grow in a thick tightly grouped mat. All of them spread far apart and lose the mat, what does this mean and how do I get them to grow tightly together and have a thick dense growth?

I'm currently achieving that in my new 30 gallon tank and never experienced dense polyp growth before.

So, here's what's different in my estimation.

Stability. This is the first tank that has had automated dosing. I'm using kalkwasser in the ATO and I have an ALK dosing pump that runs at night. These two things provide me with alkalinity and calcium levels that rarely deviate from a set point, and if they do, it happens VERY slowly and can I can make minor adjustments to correct slow deviations.

Feeding. With this tank, I started feeding Reef Roids and amino acids. I suspect the amino acids have done more for the tank than anything else.

Those are the two thing that I feel made the most improvement for me. There were a lot of other factors involved with this tank, but those are the two that I would pinpoint as the main factors in dense polyp growth for me.

Also, lighting intensity. For best color, my zoas prefer the darker parts of the tank, like down at the sand bed. Hope this helps. I'm sure others will have different advice.
