I applaud your attempt, but why would anyone in their right mind pay for YOU to set up a frag tank? You need to pay for it on your own like the rest of us. Not trying to sound harsh, but your expectation of people in this hobby paying for your endeavors is unrealistic, and personally i find it rather offensive to post such an inquiry here.

No no its fascinating. excellent case study

I predict he will get some contributions keep us updated/ with the vastness of the web, odds are someone kicks him spare paypal change. I think he will earn 15$ off this venture which is amazing as free money, five grand in a bank acct would take 13 yrs for equiv

i must contribute the opposite of 15$ but pls update, fifteen bucks is the prediction after it closes. the honesty of what he's spending it on, not making a viral fake ploy, is worth six dollars someone payup

im a kickstarter appraiser as a side job.

I'm thinking of starting a kickstarter myself. My tank really needs an mp10. The coral in my tank might DIE!!! if they don't have more flow. So if you love coral, please think of donating. I mean investing.

Think it will work?

lol

Ya. +1

I want a 200 gallon Elos system, maybe I should Kickstart that. It will reverse Global Warming and save kittens.

Hmmm

I actually like potato salad and pledged that potato salad dude 111$. The bite he sent although slightly rancid after taking 5 business days to get to my house was pretty tasty. The recipe is to die for. I think we should all pledge some money to bilgepump. We need to save some of these corals!

It might have been more beneficial to make the rewards more appealing. I wouldn't spend $75 on one single soft coral at my LFS. Perhaps if $75 got you a frag pack or something down the line. If it is supposed to be a well cared for propagation tank then I would think you would have plenty of frags to give away to your 'backers'.

I hope this is a troll...

If not... Good luck. The issue with this kickstarter, I think, is that most kickstarters actually benefit more than just the person asking for help/donations. Videogames, documentaries, charitable projects, etc. In this case, you don't have the money to start a frag propagation tank so rather than saving your own money for a few months or years and getting what you want, you are asking people to donate their money to you NOW so you can get one. You are offering very low incentives for anyone who is will to help, as well. $50 for rights to name one of two fish? I could do that walking in to a Pet store. $5 for you to send an email? Kickstarter does that anyways. $10 for the ability to help decide what goes IN the tank as far as coral? Again, I could go to the LFS and help someone for free... If your frags were going to be super high-end frags, then I could see $75-100 for a nice one, but my LFS sells decent frags of all kinds for $10-$60, softies, LPS, AND SPS. $75 for a softie? Pfft.

Sorry man, I think you are going to lose this one.

How about a tee shirt at $50.

"I gave Henry $50 and alI got was this tee shirt".

High quality Beefy Tee with fine silk printing of course.

Not that cafe press crap.

Meytal Cohen sent me a T, and I like it.

I agree, additional issues I see are:

  • He talks about protected corals that are in danger and such. If they're protected can he even get them? He doesn't explain the full implications of this.
  • His getting the corals in the first place will negatively impact reefs unless he only buys aqua cultured corals from ORA and the like. For a project like this I'd say cough up the cash and go only ORA.
  • There's zero way to be sure of a few things. A) How do we know the tank won't crash? B) It's not enough money to start a serious frag tank IMO. C) No telling how he's to do it, such as how long he'll be able to keep it up, etc.
  • There's no reward for low dollar pledges. Frags need to basically go to all pledge levels IMO. If I can pledge $5 now and in 6 months get a decently sized frag of ORA blue birdsnest for the cost of shipping, why wouldn't I? Would be a lot more successful that way.
  • He gives no examples of past success. How do we know he can even maintain a basic soft coral reef, let alone a full blown SPS frag tank with excellent growth rates etc.
  • Where does the money from growing the corals go? No explanation there either. You (OP) won't get donations so you can start a business. If it was like all proceeds go to the tank or a reputable reef charity etc, then maybe it could work. Maybe he(OP) could say take out like 2% for the time and space of running the tank.
  • No stretch goals is bad, implies that this kickstarter was made on a whim and not well planned out long term.
  • OP needs to have a list of equipment and a very well thought out plan. If he did get the full $1k, how are we to know that's actually all being spent on the tank?
  • He gives a brief description and a pretty picture, asks for $1000, and that's it. There needs to be like a 5 page PDF to describe exactly what the plan is, how he plans to set it up, what he's experienced with, etc. Right now it honestly looks like there is no real plan.

These are all holes in the plan that should be blatantly obvious to anyone. @OP, not trying to be mean but you really need to take a look at these sort of things and rewrite at very least. I backed Star Citizen (google it) for $650 so far, so I'm not someone who's never backed a KS before. I say all of this seriously as someone who does back projects.

TL;DR

If you can't afford it on your own, don't do it. Offer better rewards, rewrite with better description. Show past experience, prove you can do it. A $5+ship SPS frag would be better, a $75 softie+ship(most likely) will get you no where. Also, nobody is going to pay you to do what they can do on your own. This is where proof of extremely successful systems comes in.

My advice to you personally: Spend $500, get a 20L and a Ebay Reefbreeders LED fixture, an AC70, some rock, salt, ATO, nano skimmer, and a pump and set up a small frag tank. Grow SPS in it and show you can do it before asking for donations. Start with LPS, it's easier. Cut an eggcrate rack to go across the whole tank and you have a decent frag tank. Get some freshwater black sailfin mollies and convert them to SW, I hear they eat GHA. Start with dry rock and dip everything like crazy, keep it pest free and sell to locals first to make $$$ for a serious tank. Later you could get another LED for $90 shipped off Ebay and upgrade tank to a shallow Deep Blue (48x24x12) with the 20L as your sump.

This is awesome...

I need to make one of these for a nanobox duo

I will also add a drop cam so you can see OUR tank at anytime.

It could be "OUR" without the maintenance on your part

:)
