silent1mezzo
Hey Everyone, Yesterday I picked up my first coral, pulsing xenia. I got three heads and placed them in different spots in the tank. I noticed that one looks really well, the other two not so great. What am I doing wrong Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 5ppm Can't test other parameters as my kit's in the mail LED: 24w basic LED (new LED in the mail as well). Healthy looking (medium placement) Not as healthy looking (low placement) Looks pretty bad (medium placement) Link to comment
717Tank
It's possible it is nothing you are doing wrong, xenia have been difficult for me as well. I had one colony that looked great for awhile and then just started going downhill. Give it a few days to see if there is any improvement but new lighting would definitely help, and checking your other parameters ASAP, take a sample of water to the store you bought the xenia they should be able to test for you. Xenia do like some water flow so are they in different water flow areas? Link to comment
silent1mezzo
They're all relatively in the same flow area. I bought them off a local guy so he's not there to test my water. I can take it into a shop but it'd be sitting for a few hours, is that ok? Link to comment
Dark_ice
Give them some time to set in and get use to stuff, exenia are picky with shipment and new tanks, they will also look crappy them perk up. I have had these for years and use to the way they act. Give it some time and you should be alright As far as placement mine are at the top but my lights are turned down low. They are in a slightly med flow Link to comment
silent1mezzo
Alright thanks guys. I'll give them some time to get comfortable. Link to comment
farkwar
Those look horrible. I would pull those before they die and foul the water. Its not like they cost you a car payment or anything. The nice one will be speading like Bermuda grass in a month. Thats what I would do. Dont confuse that with me telling you what you should do Link to comment

Dont confuse that with me telling you what you should do I on the other hand prefer the general look of an aquarium over a collection aquarium with 100's of frags. Stinging coral choke points are the best way to keep it inline imo. Also yeh the shriveled ones don't look like the healthy normal coral response. I don't keep silver tipped xenia though so I may be wrong. Link to comment
joeshmoe76
Once they start growing you are going to regret placing them in three locations in the tank. They are a weed, but very cool if you confine them to a location. I've never had much luck removing them from a rock or anything. I usually end up giving away or throwing out part of the rock. silent1mezzo
So I tossed the one that didn't look good. The other two are doing great so far (haven't split up or multiplied yet). Link to comment
