cindyp
hello friends! i've been so busy with writing stuff and now i'm at a writing retreat for a long weekend. but i had to share. i cleaned the tank (weekly) with water change before driving to the retreat. naked worm has been moving less and less, and had basically been curled up against the plastic tube all week--though still wiggling when i direct fed phyto. well. i cleaned the tank and picked up its tub to get to the algae in the corner and saw that my worm was in TWO PARTS. it had a "broken" tail ever since it crawled out, and the tail had finally split off. IT was in the plastic tube and my naked worm was still outside the tube. COLOR ME CONFUSED. i touched the worm and it totally reacted. my bad. i wasn't sure if it was still alive! i didn't touch the tail bit as it was in the tube-- but i am assuming it had WIGGLED into the tube. cause no part of the main worm had been in the tube at all. colore me confused. i've been reading about reproduction and was led to believe dusters didn't usually split to reproduce. i don't know. and i don't know if i have two worms now, and if either will live. what even is this... Days of Our Tanks... Link to comment

Days of Our Tanks... Cindy, I'm sorry to say this...but that's usually not a good sign when the worm is split into two. I once had a duster that did the same thing. It died less than 24 hours later. Yours might defy the odds and regrow however, so don't give up completely. Btw, I saw the exact same duster (matching colors and plumage) as yours for sale at a LFS in the city today. It was stunning and was shipped from Hawaii. I was so scared to ask the manager how much it costs because my dad kept giving me warning looks from the corner of the shop lol. Perhaps if I gather enough savings, I'll end up purchasing it after all. I currently have a regular purple and white banded on shipped from Indonesia. It looks simple compared to yours, but it's somehow easier to take care of. I think you should try dusters again though - don't let this experience stop you from keeping them! They're such lovely animals to have in the tank. Btw, I'm also a writer and an artist. It's good to see so many talented folk here on NR united by one common hobby. Link to comment

It's a gorgeous little fella. i paid $20 for this duster. poor thing. i'm away on a writing retreat so maybe it will already be dead when i return? it's been stressed ever since in my tank. feel so bad!! Poor little worm. I'm not sure what it means when they do that but I hope it can recover. thanks, kat. Link to comment
antsypants
Sorry to hear about the worm I've been following along your chronicles but I don't have much to add; most of the major points have been hit. I'm not even sure how dusters reproduce... o_o Seriously enjoying all the talent this threads bringing out though I'm terrible at painting but I do love to sketch. Wish I had more experience with water color for sure Link to comment

And don't beat yourself up over it, sometimes bad things just happen for no reason in this hobby. hello all! 140 mile drive back and i'm home! i was gone for three nights at a writing retreat (very successful and fun to boot!). i had hub do NOTHING while i was gone. i figured no food, phyto, or top offs was better than HIM trying to do anything at all. ha! well, everything looked fine and naked worm still wiggling. the tail bit is still in the plastic tube, and i've done nothing to it. i didn't want to touch it and i figured if it started to look rotty or something, i'd fish it out? i don't know. aiiiii SHADOW i really appreciate the little prayer. i have passed the 4 week mark in my misadventures with naked duster worm. teenyreef
Welcome home and yay for nothing bad happening! Sometimes just leaving the tank alone is good for it, and I'm so glad that the worm is still hanging in there. If good thoughts were all it took, he'd be doing great now Link to comment

If good thoughts were all it took, he'd be doing great now thanks, teeny! i looked in tube and didn't see any movement after feeding with phyto this morning from the 1/2 inch tail segment that was shed. but you never know with these things. if it starts looking like The LIving Dead Worm, i'll fish out. cindyp
today has been a wash for me writing wise. but i feel good about where i am in regards to my deadline. HAPPY thing. i love my little pink lobo so much (and it seems to do well compared to acans, favais, etc.) that i was on the market for a new one. i lost out on one of the ASD sales a few weekends back, but all new shipments came in and i put a bid in this sunday. got it! but when i went in, it was too big! the issue was that it was TWO lobos and the shape was square. well, i opted for this very large piece instead. it is perhaps three inches? but its more rectangular shape allows me to put it in the tank. i think it's gorgeous and i hope it does well. they are super slow growing. my ycg is on my other lobo that looks like an acan. best of all? i got a good discount for this one due to the misunderstanding about the size of the original lobo i had wanted. (which in all honesty isn't as nice as this one at all!) PS. i'm sorry i haven't had the time to visit and comment on everyone's threads. hope to be able to have more time to visit soon. sequel is due mid february. eep. Link to comment
cindyp
guys, i just shone a light into the tube and the "tail" end of my duster worm that was cast off is totally alive and squirming. it looks "healthy" as much as a nake duster worm that was the last 1/4 segment of main duster can look. whenever i shine a light on the worm(s) they squirm a lot. they might be sightless, but they can definitely sense the light. i can't even with this. i'm concerned for my new giant lobo already! it got all spiky (flesh retracted) and i don't know if it's just due to trauma of new tank? i hope so. i fed it some oyster feast and it is feeding, i believe. so that makes me happy. teenyreef
Your new lobo is beyond beautiful The shape in your picture reminds me of a very exotic clam I've never had a lobo but I've had lots of acans, and they tend to recede and get unpuffy quite often in the first days or even week or two in the new tank. I just feed them a lot and they start puffing up pretty quick. And two huzzahs! for the the naked worm(s) Link to comment
Snow_Phoenix
Your new lobo is astonishing. Love the colors! Rainbow indeed! And don't worry too much over the worm(s), if both halves are still wriggling and alive, then I think they're going to make it. Link to comment
kimberbee
i can't even with this. Oh, Cindy!! I'll all be ok!! Link to comment

Your new lobo is astonishing. Love the colors! Rainbow indeed! Oh, Cindy!! I'll all be ok!! just call me perplexed Nurse Cindy. i'm now attached to the arse end of my naked duster as well. and hoping it'll pull through. this is ridiculous. cute new avatar!! Dryland
Is your goby sitting on the lobo? Or is it getting hit with a lot of current? Those are things that might irritate it. I usually only notice my LPS looking sad when my alk gets too low. Link to comment

I usually only notice my LPS looking sad when my alk gets too low. hello! my goby is lying on the mini lobo. yeah, i don't monitor alk but do weekly water changes with premium coral salt water. my teeny lobo has been okay, so hoping this bigger one will fare well too. though it is four times bigger. yikes! it is looking less spikey this morn! still a little spikey, but compare to yesterday's foto after just getting in tank. it seemed to eat happily last night. new avatar is from my writing retreat a few days ago! cindyp
Love the new lobo, Cindy. Sounds like you had a good time at the writing retreat too thanks jamie! definitely had a GREAT time at the writing retreat. got 4300 words written in two days. that's more than double the word count on a good day for me. of course, the rest of the two days i've been at home, i haven't written. ha! my lobo is all spikey again. i hope it is just a matter of adjusting. i'll feed her again tonight. i read somewhere that the lobo is the poor hobbyist's scoly. not that this piece was cheap. but still cheaper than a fancy similar scoly, i suppose! teenyreef
Good luck on finishing your writing before the deadline! I'm a computer guy who knows how to write so now I spend a lot of time writing proposals instead of programs. Long hours rewriting the same 20 pages over and over and over again But I definitely know how aggravating it is to write under a deadline Link to comment
Acielot
How frequently are you doing WCs? And how much chemical media? I setup the 8g too and I feel that I may be using too much phosphate remover for it's size. Link to comment
