Alex_G
Hello people, i have been searching about the UPS backup battery systems and after two days of continue reading i am totally lost, here at my country we have from time to time minor power outages, specially in winter, the power failures are for one to two hours duration, once or twice in the season, i have been like this for years, but now i decided i want some backup, my tank is a JBJ 28g and i am planning just to run the two accela at the return and the MJ 1200 skimmer pump, so 3 small pumps in total, so my logic was a 1000VA/500watts ups has to run the 3 pumps for at least 2 hours, before buy it i started to read, i found a lot of people using ups and other saying is the wrong way to go. but i found some posts saying it is an ac power so the UPS will burn out the pumps, someone wrotte that the ups will kill any pumps are attached to it, my question is, cosindering the amount of time it will run, is a good investment? It will kill my pumps? Thanks a lot for any help Link to comment
MikeTR
Find something like this: http://www.thatpetplace.com/silent-air-b11-aquarium-air-pump-battery-operated?sc=10&category=1692 It only turns on when the power goes out. Link to comment
Laagernaught
I run a UPS on my 40 breeder. I have 2 koralia Evo's and an Aquaclear 50 HoB plugged into it. This gives me an estimated 2 hrs and 40 mins during an outtage, though i have never needed it for that long. The important thing is to get a unit that produces a true sinewave. I made the mistake of using one that didn't at first and yes the pumps will not operate properly and would surely fail. This is the unit I have now - http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/pfc-sinewave-series/CP1000PFCLCD.html It transitions without a hiccup when power is out. So for a short outtage solution I would reccomend it. If you upgrade to an Ecotech pump their battery backup runs the pump at a very low percentage and can keep the tank circulated for over a day. I had that installed on another system with an Mp10 and it worked great. Link to comment
Alex_G
Thanks a lot for the answers, could you please explain me what true sinewave is? I am sure i did not read about it in the specs of the ups i have read Link to comment
chicagoreef
A follow up comment on the ecotech battery backup. I have been researching the belkin u-verse battery backups - they are about $20 vs $160 for the ecotech ones. With the right cables you might be able to power all kinds of stuff Link to comment
