This was back in January. One of the first tanks shipped. It was a hairline that shattered once the pressure was increased from the sand and water.

My first one shattered in the same spot after fully filling with rock, sand, and water. It was a disaster. Had to run to get a temporary tank from pet supermarket and waited two weeks as the replacement arrived in pieces!

In the end, it will get resolved.

So let me get this straight. It looks like you had some sort of hairline fractures inside the glass. Were the fractures in the front pane? My issue is much different, just a chip out of the bottom pane in the corner. And then the last picture is the first replacement tank, and it cracked during shipment, or is this what you sent back to them.

This was back in January. One of the first tanks shipped. It was a hairline that shattered once the pressure was increased from the sand and water.

How long after you filled it up did it take for the tank to crack? As of now, mine has been full of water in the garage since last night and so far no issues.

Lol of they let you keep the damaged tank ship it to me I'll pay for shipping lol birth day didn't bring a tank to me ;(

LOL.....I highly doubt they would let that happen. I am still not sure what I am going to do, to be honest.

And as an update, I did speak with Jason at CAD last night. His response was, "It's part of the polishing called wet sanding; it's perfectly safe to use and is under our warranty."

While my initial feeling was in aggreance that it was safe to use, I do not agree that this is an acceptable final product. Wet sanding is a process to smooth out the edges after cutting the glass, and when properly done, would not result in a chip being taken our of the edge. I responded to him with this in mind and he is standing by his response that it is safe to use and covered under warranty.

For now, I am taking it slow, leak testing for 3 days in the garage and getting some input from all of you before I make any final decisions. Again, my initial instinct was that it would be fine holding water, but I am a little nervous, especially since this is going upstairs and over brand new laminate flooring that is throughout both up and down stairs. I am still leaning towards just keeping the tank as long as it passes the leak test, but give me your opinions.

Note: I fixed the link for the picture of the chip from the previous page.

Also, With all this talk of the chip, I totally forgot to mention that this came last night:

Ok, so, if there were something wrong, it would have been seen by now then. I placed my tank after inspection, added sand and rock, filled with water, added all the livestock... went out to get a pizza for family i had over, and by the time i returned, there was water seen around the rim of the base... i said, uh that can't be good, wiped it incase i thought it was spillage, it continued to seep out. emptied half the tank, and slid half off the cabinet to inspect the glass, and found that crack... tried silicone to help the leak but it literally just continued to DROP out one by one... annoying as hell.

The next day we set up a replacement but it was shipped without the WARNING: GLASS! stickers and it had one dent in the front of the box, looked as if it was poked by something, so they sent out another one with several glass stickers on it and it arrived perfect.

just some bad luck, and after all, its glass, shit happens...

But here i am 8 months later, tank doing stellar!

Ok, that makes me feel a bit better. Sounds like it was quite the ordeal for you, though. I think I am just going to move on with things and try to forget that I ever found the chip, as long as nothing bad happens in the next 2 days of leak testing.

Ya, I am not sure if i would be willing to risk that chance!

Well, I wouldn't blame you after what you already went through. Unfortunately, even if I was to want to send it back, CAD so far has not really entertained that option. They very adamantly said it is a normal, from the wet sanding process, and will not affect the integrity of the tank.....oh and it is under warranty in case anything happens.....

Maybe that don't understand the seriousness of the issue... Stress to them that due to it being on the underside of the joints, apposed to being only on the top open area of the glass, its at the bottom and creates a weak spot in the glass with potential for future issues.

Just trying to do my part in helping out. I have a good relationship with those guys, so I don't see any reason that shouldn't be a reasonable response...

This sort of thing could happen with any tank company :(

I understand completely. I have been racking my brain to figure out whether I should push any further or not. I am not knocking CAD at all as I am still happy with my decision to go with them, just not sure what to do from here.

That pump is awesome. Its got a ton of power so the first thing your going to want to do is press the speed button until its on the first one.

Don't use it yet. Give them a few days, continue to work with them to try and resolve the issue.

I would agree

Yeah, I am excited to try it out. I have heard that it turns on into the highest setting. Not sure why they did that, but I will keep it in mind.

As for the tank, I spoke with Jason at CAD yesterday and he requested better pictures. He wanted to see if I could get a picture from the front/side through the front/side pane. I think he want to see how deep the chip/scallop is before making a decision on whether to send me a replacement. Here are the best pics I could get.

On a better note, I started playing around with my rock scape. Here are a couple possibilities. I still don't feel like I have come to a final one that I like, but these were the best 2 I had come up with. I figure that I will just keep playing with it each night and eventually I will come up with something I like. What do you all think?

I vote a lil less rock. The display fills quickly and leaving room on all sides to clean glass is a must imo, wish I would have went with a lil less rock.

the second scape looks better IMO. it follows rule of thirds.

Thanks, I did kinda like it, but I am not the biggest fan of such a large structure. Gonna keep trying and see what I get.

For reference, the board that the rock is sitting on is almost exactly the inside dimensions of the tank. In the first picture, the middle structure is about 10 inches tall.

I still envision 1 larger structure with 1 - 2 smaller rocks, just can't really find something that stands out to me.

Maybe go with the first pic, but get rid of the right hand structure. Then move the middle structure over to the right and take off the very top rock. Then add a little bit to the left structure?

i love the first one.

Thanks Matty, still playing with it, but I appreciate the compliment.

This is about 20-24#'s

20140713_192307_zpsu9j5nil4.jpg

I have about 1.5" clear all the way around and about 1/2" - 3/4" in the back.

Just out of curiosity, how is your flow throughout the tank with that much rock in there?

That looks about perfect Drama, I think I'm gonna get 20# to start mine.

Keep in mind that different types of rock are more dense and some are more porous. So 20 lbs of 1 type may fill your aquarium while 20 lbs of another may be significantly less.

If you notice in the pic I have my return turned to flow behind the rock scape. The return is weird, I have played around with it, turning it in different directions and experimenting with flow. As I was playing with it, I noticed the level in the rear chambers fluxuates quite a bit depending what direction you have it facing and or if you have a hard bend on it. Still lots of flow with the return.

Right below the return I have a hydor 425 pointing at the front corner of the tank, this helps eliminate my dead spots in the corners/right side of tank and helps counter my sand building up on one side of the tank from the mp10 on the opposite side.

The mp10 is at 50% in rc mode and is placed in the middle on side pane and positioned closer to the front of display blowing the current just in front of the lr. Seems to be eliminating all the dead spots.

Imo just 1 mp10 was not enough, I would like to go with 2, one on each side of tank but I had the 425 laying around and thought I would put it to use. Seems to be working out okay and leaves a minimal footprint in the tank.

I agree with you about the lr and different types being more dense or porous. Im using aprox 16-18# pukani and 2-5# of aquamaxx dry rock and a few small pieces of rubble. Very porous imo.

Drama do you think it would be possible to add something like a PicO Shallow Shield, raise the MP10 closer to the top so that it creates more of the gyre effect, and crank it up higher so that you would only need one?

Link to comment

I dont see why not. I do not own a shield but have seen a few videos and have heard nothing but good things about the shield. Also would allow you to raise the pump higher in the tank

Interesting. I will have to see how the rw4 works out. I may end up adding a second rw4 if one is not enough.

I took another crack at my scape earlier tonight. I feel like I am getting closer to something I like.
