filter socks

Im curious what kind of filter sock set ups are out there and in your tanks. Single, dual, micron. How often are you changing them, cleaning, custom set ups, sump hanging kits etc.

Whatcha got, how do you like it, is it noisy when the drain hits it? What micron bag is best? Flow restriction?

Get at least 100 micron.

Ive been building my sumps with a drain chamber that flows up and over the sock holder..

Theres a lip on the holder, that the water will flow over when/if the sock is full.

If you have a big tank get the 7 inch. Dont do 2 socks, youll procrastinate changing them, the detritus will breakdown if you do that.

Get a bucket, at least 5 socks, change them at least once a week, every other day is better. When you put your 5th one in, put the others in washer. Low water, hot, cotton wash, with all rinse cycles on. Use a little baking soda if you like.

Ive been thinking of doing this with the seperate drain chamber and letting it oveRflow into the sock and thought of doing this using two socks but I hear you about procrastinating and not changing both regularly. Only thing that makes me second guess this is deterious getting trapped in the seperate drain chamber before it overflows into sock or the sock getting clogged and it overflowing the sump.

I guess if the drain had enough pressure that it would stir up that first chamber preventing deterious from accumulating. do you have a valve on your drain to adjust for this?

Would a 200 micron sock be to small and clog to quickly? Also has anyone made there own socks? If so what type of fabric should be used?

Am I the only one who stinges and uses a pantyhose as a filter sock on this site? I think I am.

how well does that work? do you have pics of your setup?

I use felt socks, have been thinking of switching to mesh.. also considering running without socks and only using socks during cleanings.. I think my socks are 100 micron, don't remember.. I have an eshopps sock holder..

100 microns gets you better filtration than 200. At 300 it will only catch boulders. The lower the micron, the more it will catch.Changing a sock depends on each individual system, no two are alike.

Felt socks grab detritus much more than mesh.

Unfortunately, I didn't take specific pictures of it. :( I basically secured the panty hose to the outlet pipe that feeds into the sump using a rubberband. A large amount of silt and debri gets trapped in the hose itself, and since panty hoses are super cheap, I change them every biweekly rather than washing them.

Right now I still use panty hoses as media bags for my GFO, Biosphere and activated carbon. Sure works like a charm. :)

DramaD,

Ill get you a pic. Wont overflow sump.

Right now, I need to pull a slimy pipe out of the sock, then put slimy pipe back in sock by hand.

First design.

Down pipe on the right. Flows up thin channel. Over sock, down sock, out to sump.

When its filled, water will flow over wier and make splashy sound, remind me change sock. No slimy hands necessary.

Second design. Lost the drain channel baffle. Dont really need it, too hard to glue.http://s1078.photobucket.com/user/RichardSperry/media/20140728_113014.jpg.html]20140728_113014.jpg[/url]

Do you see the flow?

Use CELL CAST acrylic only. Extruded is a nightmare of misery.

Crude flow diagram. Theres an 8" baffle right after the sock chamber. It will have through holes too, in case I need to put some floss or carbon clothe stuff in there.

Then skimmer, with 8" water level. Then ceramic media, up current, to prevent settling on media, one inch off bottom of sump.. TLF 150s hung on the walls where they fit.

12" x 4" x 8" pump chamber with ATO sensor, is last chamber. I keep the pump chambers small to help prevent floods; I would rather burn up a pump than overfill display because pump chamber too big.

So your drain has plenty of flow to stir up anything that gets dumped into the first chamber before the sock?

I can prob modify the sump i just picked up easily because it has a divider glued in one of the end chambers w/ a 1/2" gap at the bottom. I would just need to cut the silicone and move the glas all the way to the bottom and then re glue then make some kind of flow director toward the sock.

Heres a pic of the weird baffle in the sump I just picked up

700 to 900 gph.... its not going to collect detritus..

It might be a snail saver too. I bought a lettuce nudi a couple weeks ago, went straight to the overflow into the sock.

Had to fish him out of the sock, pia.

The drain chamber is also for my vertical heaters.

In my experience, wherever you put the pump, it will have too much water in its chamber.

Except that small and tall one(if you make it short). I would guess thats the first drain pipe chamber designed, I dunno.
