Hi guys, I am looking into getting a reverse osmosis system, and considering melevs reef or bulk reef supply. Does anybody have any preference of one system over another?

Spectrapure is extremely highly rated. I am not sure if BRS carries them but I am pretty sure Marine Depot does. AZDesertRat is our resident H20 expert and highly recommends spectrapure membranes and filters.

I had a spectrapure 90GPD unit for 2 years after the first 6 months the pressure gauge died on me. Last month i upgraded to the BRS 150GPD unit and so far i like it alot. When i opened the box i noticed that all the extra options that was listed on the site was already installed on the unit such as the flush valve, membrane upgrade and the auto shut off.

But its going to depend on much water you plan on making and BRS service is top notch so thats what really sold me when i was in the market for a new rodi unit.

No other vendor compares to Spectrapure. They specially treat and test all their RO membranes either in batches or individually by hand with their Select series, they use absolute or near absolute rated low micron sediment filters and carbon blocks and best of all they custom blend every ounce of their DI resins in house based on thousands of hours or testing. These all pay off by giving you better water quality and alower cost of ownership.

Others use dry off the shelf untested and untreated membranes so you get what you get with no guarantees, use higher micron filters often as effective as a screen door and untested bulk resins that may or may not be fresh and best for our application. Ask questions when you are shopping such as what filters they use and in what micron ranges and ratings, are their membranes tested, do they use one high quality low micron 12,000 to 20,000 gallon carbon block or two less efficient unneeded (more expensive to replace and less efficient) ones, do they blend their own DI, do they provide capillary tube flow restrictors you can adjust as the end user, do they come with pressure gauges, are their housings and fittings ANSI/NSF and UPC rated etc. Just because systems look similar doesn't mean they are. Shop wisely.

Don't waste money on things like flush kits that have no proven value other than to give you a lighter wallet and a warm fuzzy feeling. Stick with things proven to work.

Three vendors I highly recommend besides Spectrapure are www.buckeyehydro.com who do offer tested high rejection rate membranes also, www.purelyh2o.com and of course Melev.

Spectrapure has offered high production systems for decades, their 180 GPD systems blow the doors off of any other system on the market. Don't fall for some vendors low waste claims, membranes must be flushed period. You double up on membranes and it is even more critical since the second membrane is receiving the brine or waste from the first, and you need a minimum of 65 psi to operate it. Spectrapure tried the single 150 GPD membranes about 10 years ago and gave up on them, they couldn't get enough of them to pass quality control inspections and the performance was dismal at best. I tried one myself.
