EcoTech Noise

I have a MP10 that needs to run at 100% but I find it two noising. If I turn it down to 80%, the noise is bearable. I would like something even quieter.

Is an MP40 operating at 70% quieter than a MP10 operating at 100%?

An MP40 at 70% is significantly more output than an MP10 at full bore. MP40s are quieter at all settings than the MP10.

They're all loud pumps as far as I'm concerned and have limited lifespans on the dry side bearings if run at high speeds. Switching to jebao wp's has saved my sanity although I would still use vortechs in small tanks when space is at a premium. I was running 2 MP40's and 2 MP10's and my living room sounded like a pump testing lab.

Personally I don't care for the MP40's, which were the first vortech pumps. They are poorly designed compared to the MP10's and MP60's which corrected the design flaws that the MP40 have. Biggest problem is the propeller is only attached at the base of the wet side unlike the MP10 and MP60 which have a shaft connecting to the base and the nozzle side through the propeller. This makes the MP40 wet side prone to damage which is why they offer wet side repair kits. When the wet side gets out of balance it increases the stress on the wet and dry side bearings. Incorrectly using the pin spacer also leads to damage of the pump. Dry side bearing failure and noise is very common on these.

But comparing the 2, a MP10 at 100% is equivalent to a MP40 at about 25% which should be substantially quieter. If you keep the flow at 25 - 30%, you should get a much longer life out of one compared to running it at a higher speed, and it should be much less likely to experience bearing problems and wet side failure. Tank has to have 3/16" glass at a minimum. Always make sure to use the correct pin spacing and make sure the wet and dry side are perfectly aligned.

is the wet side noisy or the dry side?

I ordered a new wet side about 4 months ago for my mp10 I got used and it's noisy as hell, I'm talking with ecotech now to get it replaced (I wouldn't have waited this long except I was under the impression it would break in and quiet down). dry side may need bearings replaced next on that one.. nice thing is that you CAN service them..

I have a 2 year old one that I bought brand new and to this day it's nearly dead silet even at 100%..

The dry side is noisy.

Yeah, the jebao wp's are beginning to look like an attractive option. I liked the controlability of the Ecotech's when paired with the ReefLink, but I could do the same and so much more if I paired the Jebao's with a Neptune Controller.

I'm with ya, I was considering a jebao myself as a third pump.. my only issue is wire in the tank.. I know that's a huge premium to pay for no wire but I can't help it I like the clean look.. although it would be easier to get better flow patterns since the mp's can't be aimed..

Wires in the tank kill it for me. Imo I would go ecotech if you want a clean look. I want to add more power heads to the back of my tabk but I hate looking at wires. Plus a MP40 for the back glass is too rich for me lol

If it's the dry side, I have sent it back to ecotech and had them replace the barings. Depending if the warranty is expired or not you may have to pay.

I have 2 mp10 and 1 mp40 and all are fairly quiet
