Emergency.... Need advice

Stupid lfs put rodi in my saltwater container and I just did a wc. Everywhere is closed and salinity is 1.019. What do I do??? I'm so worried everything's gonna die. Because of this I only had half a gallon of saltwater and it didn't bring up salinity any.

I don't think there is much you can do except a WC to bring the salinity back up to something acceptable ASAP. That is a huge swing if it was 1.026 before. Enough to kill inverts.

I know but without salt I can't do a water change? Is their anything I can get at walmart?

I can't believe this. I should have checked the water in the containers first. I feel so stupid. My kids are upset and worried about the tank. What salts work? I've been looking online but can't seem to get a for sure answer.

Are the stores closed? Petco?

Do you have a local reef club? Can you borrow salt?

Walmart does not have salt water fish stuff that I know of :/

It's Sunday all the fish stores and even petsmart closed at 7. God I'm freaking out. I don't know anyone with a saltwater tank to borrow salt from. I guess all I can do is wait til tomorrow at noon when fish store opens. It's 9:45 here now. I don't want to watch this happen but I'm gonna be by the tank all night. I won't be able to help myself.

Yep it's gone. I'm smacking myself. I always just dump it in the yard. :( oh wait I have a thing I put some very old wc in and all the bags from lfs when I got new stuff. Could I filter this through a rag and then get temp right and add it to tank. It's reading salinity 1.032

Do you think using the old water with lfs water mixed in it is gonna hurt worse than the salinity swing? I can filter out any detritus but probably not any chemicals they may have had in there systems.

I have a clip on fan. It's better than doing nothing. I'm gonna put it on the tank right now

One thing that you *don't* want to do (since it probably will be something you might think of - since i did..) is to use table salt. It's got anti-caking and other chemicals that are bad news..

Terre haute Indiana. I can't find anything online closer than a few hours away
Uncle Bills should open up at 9 in the morning. Wouldn't be surprised if they are the ones who gave you RODI instead of salt.

Two occelaris clowns, three mussels, three scallops of some kind, a peppermint shrimp, brittle star, two nassarius snails, 7 blue leg hermits, small zoa frag, 2 ricordea, green mushroom coral, teeny snails, lots of button tunicates, Brain coral, rock boring urchin

It was inland aquatics. I'm really surprised and I'm sure it was a misunderstanding but dang it got me mad for a minute. Then I realized it was still my fault for not checking the water to be sure.

So far the only thing acting odd are the snails and the peppermint shrimp looks less clear than normal.

you could pull out a few gallons, boil it to reduce the volume, and raise the salinity, and then add it back after floating a BAG of ice to bring it back down to the proper temp.

Make sure to use a glass pan

Thank you hillbilly that's a great idea. I'm definitely not thinking straight right now so I wouldn't have come up with that.

if you have a HOB filTER make sure to submerge your rubble, if you have any in there, if its just bags of media make sure to replace them as they wont have any water flow on them after the level in the tank is too low for the HOB to work.

Hope it works out man, things should be fine, dont stress too much

*sorry for the mis spellings, the wife decided it was margarita night

I would test it for ammonia since its been sitting around in-case debris is rotting in it. Then you could boil it to kill any parasites. Carbon will take care of chemicals.

Just an idea. Never boiled salt water before but I would think killing the bacteria/pods, ect in it won't be that big of a deal. ???

We'll I did that last night and got salinity up to 1.021 so now should I do a wc today and then just top off with saltwater til it's back to normal? Everyone seems ok the only thing I've noticed is some kind of algae breaking down but the hermits are eating it.

Glad to hear it all turned out more or less ok. This sounds like a pretty solid plan of attack to get back to where you were.
