cindyp
hello all, i'm a newbie to the hobby. i've had my 3 gallon pico reef for five months now, but would like to upgrade in the fall. i'm not a DiY hobbyist at all. so the less complicated and more all inclusive the tank i get, the better. please hit me with any suggestions you've got. i'm hoping that i can keep a couple of teeny fish at least in an 8 gallon? currently in my pico reef, i just have very easy soft corals, two sexy shrimps who seem happy, and an overabundance of aggressive amphipods. thank you! liquid8540
Check out an AC 50 for your filter, its a hang on the back and easy to use. I have an AC 70 on my 10gal works great no problems and hides my carbon and filter pad. I have a few lps corals and some zoas. My lights are usa current orbit Marie led's. Link to comment
johnnyriker
Just to add to Mike's suggestion. The CAD Lights 12 makes for a stabler system since it has a higher volume. johnny Link to comment

I JUST ORDERED MY CADLIGHTS 8G! it's a JULY special and marked down from $200 to $160. pretty cool. SO EXCITED! hope i can start my build thread in september. thanks for replying, all! cindyp
i got my cadlights 8g. it was packaged well and arrived super fast, but i think the back black film thing is scratched in two places? i'm not sure if wroth following up on though? also, the rear chamber is SO big--for their sump filter thing, i guess. seems a waste of space, alas. wildbill79
Brand new = not supposed to be scratched. Let 'em know. Nice buy otherwise. Let's see the pics! Link to comment
cindyp
so yeah, other than the strange white scratches at the back of the tank's plexi wall (viewable from front) there are hairline cracks orignating from where the pump screws in. i was told to send the tank back but with no further instructions as to if i'll get be reinbursed, etc. all in all, a real pain, to say the least. will see what cadlights customer service person says. ninjamyst
yea, the new cadlights waste so much in the back chamber only to support their new skimmer. but probably less than 10% of the people buying the cadlight 8g will buy their skimmer so lots of wasted display space for no reason. BUT, given the price and if you are not goin to upgrade the stock light, it's a pretty decent tank. Link to comment
FlowerMama
Evolve 8, you can see mine in my thread. Nice cheaper option. Link to comment
cindyp
thanks! i think it's just counter intuitive because a tank that size doesn't need a skimmer. and the skimmer is like more expensive than the tank. augh! i'll ask to see if they have an older version. thought i doubt it. thanks! is that the EVO brand? i looked for an 8g and they only sold 20g and 5g. will look again. Yep, Evolve 8, it's total 8 gallons including the space in the back which can hold a heater and you can put a media basket on the left side using the lighting crate if you want. So small you don't need a skimmer. The corals you have like the water w/ more nutrients in it. You'll just need a better light. Link to comment
cindyp
i spoke with Cadlights customer service and jason has been super helpful. will be sending back via fedex paid by them, and then i asked for the older 8g that has a smaller filter chamber in back, which they can provide. so i'm very happy about that--since i'm not getting the skimmer.
