Genie382
Hi all! My Nuvo 16 gallon starter kit from BRS just arrived today (so excited!) and just wanted to ask about the included power head. It's a Hydor Koralia Evolution 1050/1150 and seems like quite a bit for a 16 gallon tank...is it intended for salt water mixing? Also, if that is the case, what would you recommend for producing flow in the tank? Thanks! Link to comment
rengb6
Cobalt mj1200 is what I use. It is more flow than the included pump. Link to comment
Genie382
Thanks for the tip! Just picked one up on amazon (I also grabbed the spin stream nozzles), aside from the increased flow, reviews claim it's quieter than the stock pump too. Link to comment

The powerhead you got seems to be a little big. A cheaper option would be a hydor koralia 240. Link to comment
Genie382
Yah...I wasn't paying attention when I bought the kit (fyi, awesome in terms of all the goodies that you get given the cost)...and as I was looking at the individual items when it arrived, realized that the power head was huge. Ah well. I guess I could've stayed w/ the stock pump, but I do plan on adding corals, so I figured I'd start it off right Link to comment
Daveluce
You might have luck selling that powerhead on Craigslist or here, then use that money to buy a smaller one. Link to comment
furam28
by powerhead you mean return pump that pumps water from the back area to the display area? or are you talking about circulation pump / wavemaker to create good flow in your tank? For flow I got a Jebao WP-10 for my 20 gallon long tank (I also had it in my 15 gallon bowfront tank before I switched to the 20g). Little pricey but its tiny and made a huge difference to all my corals. Link to comment

You're going to be creating sand storms and quickly tire out your fish. Plus it's going to eat up a lot of space in that tank. A mp10 or wp10 would be perfect for that tank if you want a controllable wavemaker. Link to comment

I'll start a post up at Carolina Reefers and see if anyone would be interested. Unless you have some way of turning down the flow and I mean way down that's going to be too much. I only plan on adding some softies and easy to care coral, so hopefully I won't need an additional circulation pump (however, I'm not against it, I'm just hitting the ceiling on my budget for starting up the tank T_T) Link to comment
furam28
MJ1200 with spin stream will create a gentle flow. That should be fine to begin with. In a few months you may have to consider getting a circulation pump, not so much for the softies, but to prevent cyano growth. With a new tank you will almost surely go through a few battles with cyano and algae, and circulation pump to avoid dead spots in your tank will be one of your strongest weapons against that.
