Cycling - How does she look?

Hey guys,

So I believe I am in my 3rd week of cycling. I added live rock about a week and a half ago and my levels sky rocketed (badly). I am in the process of taking out the bioballs and adding a media rack for for the second chamber. I also just purchased a skimmer.

My levels are all really high on nitrites/nitrates, so hopefully my new accessories will help? What would anybody recommend in my media basket? There are 3 compartments.

Any other recommendations to helping my tank cycle healthily?

Thanks :)

And what do y'all think of my scape???) :)

I love the aquascape! It looks really nice.

Whats your ammonia levels? Its normal for the levels to go haywire in the beginning, thats whats cycling is for in the first place! :P I probably wouldnt add the skimmer until its done though...I imagine removing junk would only delay the cycling process.

Looks great! I love the scape!

If the ammonia is really high (perhaps above 2) you could do a partial water change to preserve life.

My ammonia is between 1.0 and 2.0... you think a partial water change would help or should I just leave it?

Leave it... the bacteria will do its job for the ammonia and nitrite portions of the cycle. Once you are reading 0 Nitrites and you have only Nitrates left (probably around 20ish), that is when I would recommend a 10-20% WC.

Aquascape looks really good. :)

Thanks guys. Love the help and advice. Any additional advice for when I get my media rack in? What should I put on it... should that wait to be installed till after the full cycling?

You can put some activated carbon and filter floss in the media rack. I'd do it a few days before you add your first inhabitants.

Yes, wait for the cycle to complete before adding any media. When you start adding critters, then think about the kind of media you want to use. I use, Purigen and Chemipue Elite. That gives me a combination of cabon, GFO and synthetic polymer to control most bad things that the critters produce and control phosphates and nitrrates some. I will change these out monthly on my 28 gal tank along with 10-15% water change weekly.

Have fun with the new tank.

The reason you want to use carbon before any inhabitants is because there may be some chemicals or otherwise bad stuff in your water from your sand, rock, or the tank manufacturing process. Filter floss will clear up silt from the water.

Great I will try the filter floss before adding anything. Thanks!
