High calcium & high mag how damaging can it be?

I've noticed my ca and mag creeping up recently and I'm not entirely sure why or what to do about it. At the start of the month ca was at 500 without dosing and yesterday it's at 520. Mag is at 1540, I'm going to test that again to make sure i didn't botch the test, but I don't dose that either. Recently because of the hi ca I've only been dosing alk which is at 8.

I feel like I should do a WC because some of the corals look mad but I'm going to test the salt mix to make sure it's not causing the high levels.

I use reef crystals and I've read that has pretty high ca, but should mag be that high? Will these levels do damage to my corals? I have sps, lps and a few softies. The lps look a bit withdrawn, some of the sps have slights stn and some of the zoas are closed.

Howdy,

I suspect maybe an expired test kit for Calcium? Reef Crystals has high calcium but nothing like Kent, which is usually around 550. The Mag test is so tedious I wouldn't worry too much if you aren't adding any.

Double check your PH. If you are having PH issues this might be a symptom. Don't fret as long as it's close, but if ultra high or low then you might have an issue IMO.

High calcium should not bother anything much except to drive down Alk. Generally if it gets too high it starts precipitating and you end up with a cloudy tank and maxed out calcium.

Thanks for the reply!

The test kit is new, i only got it maybe 2 months ago. I will check to see if it has an expiration date on though and i'll keep an eye on the alk to make sure it doesn't get too low because of the calcium. I didn't test ph but will tonight.

I'll do a wc tonight to see if that perks the corals up a bit.
