So i bought a 30g white barrel on a yardsale for $5.

Planning on using it for my RODI.

Question is... It says it was used for wax/wash car liquid thing lol it still had a bit left over at the bottom.

Is this safe to use if I clean it? And what do i use to clean this thing?

Any help appreciated. :)

Ideally the container would be approved for potable water, but any #2 high density polyethylene, #4 low density polyethylene, or #5 polypropylene container should be fine to use.

Personally I wouldn't be comfortable using it after it has been exposed to chemicals. But if I had to, I'd wash it thoroughly with Dawn dish soap (and then rinse it well).

You could also wash it with muriatic acid (this is a very strong acid, and extreme precautions are necessary when working with it). You must use it in a well ventilated area, wear protective clothing, gloves, glasses, respirator... Then you need to neutralize it with baking soda before disposing it. Vinegar is a much safer (but weaker) acid that you could use to clean it.

Finally bleach can be used to disinfect it. However, you must make sure that bleach isn't exposed to acid (as it will produce toxic gases like when you mix ammonia and bleach). In addition, bleach is a caustic substance and care must also be used when using it to disinfect a container.
