Have you tried this? Amazing fruit. So you may be wondering, why are you talking about fruit in a reef forum? Well, because this is my sponsored section that is why! RAWR! :)

No but really these things are amazing. Rare and exotic fruit is a pursuit of mine these days, anyone else know of any great stuff I haven't seen in a store already? I am growing an atemoya, had lychees, jackfruit and rambutans and longans. I know we have some naturalists here, lets get some info.

Lychees! Yum! Where can I get Lychees?

Alphonso Mangoes are amazingly delicious. Succulent ripe deep yellow in color, juicy as can be, in fact the juice will drip as you cut the fruit.

They grow them around here. One of the growers sells his stuff on Amazon.com, you can get sweetheart Lychees from him if the right season, which is now. Tropical Fruit Importers, or Tropical Importers... I forget which one. I bet in NY they have a store though with something like that, maybe try an Asian market. I had a lychee tree, but it was hit by a lawnmower or a weed whacker and never really rebounded. If you like lychees, Rambutans are very similar just sweeter. The Longans are similar, but not as sweet.

My mum loves the Custard Apple. When this fruit is ripe it is very sweet, the texture is somewhat grainy and it requires a lot of work to eat (like pomegranates). Delicious though.

Dude... I love mangosteens. <3

If you're adventurous, try out durian. I grew up with it so it smells delicious to me, but to some it has a different smell.

Try out Asian Pear, it's a slightly sweet and crunchy type of pear that's almost like eating water. It's that juicy and extremely refreshing. One of my favorite fruits.

Blood Oranges taste like candy, yum.

That looks like an atemoya, hopefully the Atemoyas taste as good. I think it is crazy I have to grow a tree for 3 years to get a fruit, but in my head it will be all worth it.

I have also had an ice cream bean fruit, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inga_feuilleei it has seeds you have to work around and some fiber strands you have to remove, but the fruit really tastes like grainy vanilla ice cream. Those trees get too big for my yard though, I am trying to find a friend to talk into growing one so I can come by later and "steal" their fruit. :)

Oh good tips, I have heard of durian then completely forgot about it. Is it like Jackfruit at all? Kind of look similar. I will have to try the Asian Pear, I have seen them around at Publix, they offer a few rare items each week. I didn't realize it was worth grabbing though.

Blood oranges are awesome, and as much as I hate to say it being from FL, the Cretan variety of navel oranges make better juice then ours. Hurt to type that out. :) I was going to try grafting a blood orange onto one of my citrus trees. I have a meyer lemon that is loaded with fruit and a honeybell that drops all of its fruit. Probably use that tree.

Never heard of them, sounds tasty. We have a Loquat tree but that's about it.

Oh, persimmons too! There's the crunchy and then soft variety. I prefer the soft, but eat it before it's mushy. Just fleshy is perfect.

Hmmm, I'll have to try that too.

I've also enjoyed Guava.

I have never tried Loquats, any good?

Sbcaes - Dragon fruit are good and easy to grow. I have a yellow and a red. My neighbor has an ackee tree, I may bother him. How are they? I will have to google the rest, accept sapote I had one of those. Good, but the texture isnt for me. Maybe as a pie though. Has anyone tried regular and black sapote and can comment on the difference? Everyone tells me I should try the black sapote. Thanks for that extensive list!

Persimmons I think I had.....are they like tomatoes or am I thinking of something else?

Loquats are like a mix of Apricots and Grapes

Sorta. They come in...

Crunchy!

Love love love the Mangosteen! I used to get frozen ones in Chinatown. Can't find 'em fresh in the states yet. I think there's an effort to grow them in the Caribbean, but until those ventures take off I think it's illegal in the states for some parasite reason.

Rambutan is a close second for me.

Great thread BTW, lol!

Mangosteen and the tiny bananas were my favorite fruits in Thailand. Didn't get to try durian, but I hear it's love or hate. Golden mango was delicious, too.

That reminds me, a close third is the golden kiwi. I've only seen it once, but it has the most rich smooth texture and balanced sweet flavor. No graininess or tartness like the regular green kiwi. It's also less hairy.

I'll have to look for it.

Tibbsy Tidbit: I dislike peeling kiwi fruit because it reminds me of the abdomen of a tarantula.

They are growing them in Southwest FL, but that is a good point. The probably cant ship them out. FL has been hit with some exotic pests from overseas and they want to QT them here, so we dont send all the whole fruit out you would expect. No oranges to CA for example... I am not sure where Rambutans come from that are sold here, I dont think it is local though.

Golden mangos are goos, Atalofua variety I think? Carrie Mangoes are my favorite, very sweet more peach like then citrus flavored. My tree lost all its fruit this year but I have some Fairchild variety mangoes that are also fiberless and should be ready in a month.

Cool! Can't wait until they figure that out. I'd pay through the nose for a fresh one.

I think rambutan is mostly Vietnam or Thailand. Could be wrong about that though..

Is it this one?

I think you can grow kiwi in FL, I might have to check that out. I think if I was younger I would have been into Pokemon cards, I like to collect a little everything natural and have it around until it becomes a hoarding situation.

Sapodillas are excellent too if you get the chance. Especially if you like figs or pumpking pie filling or pear. It is kind of a mix.

I have some in my fridge, how much nose you got?

:) I ate most of them though. They sell them online, you can find nearly any fruit but prices can fluctuate a lot, I guess because of seasonal issues.
