Biopellets

Riddler05

To Biopellet or Not to Biopellet, that is the question.

  1. 1. Do you recommend using biopellets on a nano-reef (systems less than 30g)?

  2. 2. Is it best to start using biopellets when you cycle the tank, or wait until the tank is a little more established?

    • Start using biopellets when the tank is cycling.

    • Wait until the tank has some bioload.

    • Either is fine

Nano Reefers,

I am currently setting up a new system and I am considering adding biopellets. Feeding the tank is one of the most enjoyable tasks so I would like to be able to feed my tank on the heaver side without constantly battling algae. My question for all of y'all is should I use biopellets to keep my nutrients down and when should I introduce the biopellets to my system? I already have order a skimmer that is +1 for my size tank. I have done some research but there are a lot of mixed opinions on this subject so I wanted to get some input from all of the people on this forum.

You can set the tank up with the bellet reactor or add it on later it really does not matter. But remember it takes about a month for the reactor to start working so adding it as soon as you can is best

I run one on a 11.4 gallon about 17 gallons total system

They work great but don't remove PO4 very well which is introduced with feeding. Not saying that's a deal breaker, I use one religiously on my main tank, but most likely you'll need to deal with PO4 removal down the road.

i feed alot in my 40 breeder setup between fish and corals like 4-5 times a day and since i started using biopellets i have never gone above .75 nitrates and .04 phosphates and i have 9 fish. i also use less then recommended for water volume. with sump i have about 50g and for 50g they say 200ml of pellets. i am only running 125ml and when i started i used only 75ml for first few weeks. i didnt have any issues with sudden algae blooms or stripped system to fast.
