Steve973
While I'm waiting for my tank and other supplies to arrive, I began building a stand this weekend. So far, it's just the frame. I am a software engineer by trade, so I overengineered this thing quite a bit. It's 36" tall, 24" wide, and 16" deep. The main vertical supports are 4x4 douglas fir. The top and bottom frames are 2x6, and the rest are 2x4s. Now I have to cover it with some wood and stain it so that it looks acceptable to my wife! Let me know what you think. Oh, and by the way, this design was inspired by (and basically copied from) blog.aquanerd.com. Link to comment
Reefed419
Holy Cow! You could hold a car up with that stand. Are you making it a cabinet, or just leaving it as a giant pedestal? Link to comment
Steve973
Yes, I'll be making it into a cabinet. I've never done that before, so that will be a learning experience. Link to comment
Horerczy
Very nize. Over engineering us preferable to under at the very least. Link to comment
Creeper Ky
I believe that will hold the tank just fine....even through an earthquake. Let's see it wrapped and perty. FYI those two cross members in the middle won't support any weight, but they wouldn't need to anyways with those 4X4s! Link to comment
Steve973
The middle "joists" are simply for something to drive brad nails into. I'm going to try to finish it up this weekend if I can find a good place to get some birch. Link to comment
Reefed419
If it was my stand I would build the inside first, finish it ad a shelf or two then wrap the outside and build a face plate to finish it off. You will only need some 1/4 ply for the inside, back and sides. I would go solid wood or marble on the top. Anyways can;t wait to see it when it is all done. Good luck. Link to comment
Steve973
Update: I did some work on the stand this weekend. It's not finished, but I made a lot of progress. I just need to putty, sand, and stain now. Link to comment
greasyreefer
Wow! That sucker is a tank! My stand for my 265 doesn't look as beefy as yours. Great job though for sure! Gonna look awesome when finished. Link to comment
Steve973
Thanks, everybody. I just have to figure out what I'm going to do for the door. That's still TBD. Link to comment

Steve973
This DIY project is growing, and it's ending up really not saving me a whole lot of money, but it is fun and I'm learning a bit about woodworking which is cool. I ended up using sanded oak paneling rather than birch because of the availability of trim. And for the door, I'm thinking about making a simple inset door that will be constructed in a simple rail-and-stile design. Hopefully that'll look okay. I'm open to other door suggestions, though. Steve973
Update -- It's almost finished: My camera is doing some funny things with the pictures, but hopefully it gives you an idea. Link to comment
