Ich - found during QT

So... Since I don't need to fallow a QT for 8 weeks, since I can sterilize it between uses, how long do I treat marine ich found outside the DT?

*By treatment, I mean: daily doses of Metronidazole/Focus/garlic infused foods

Not gonna lie: I have no idea how the QT naysayers justify that opinion. I mean, this is a Diver's Den fish, and one that required decompression acclimation, at that, so I KNOW it was QT'ed even before I got it.

I would follow the directions on the meds as each one will be different. I used cupramin and I believe it was 2 weeks and then I did 100% WC/sterlized tank with vinegar, added clowns back and observed for another 4 weeks. I was very paranoid about Ich getting into my DT.

Diver's den doesn't always QT long enough for disease to show. It is not uncommon for Ich to show up in DD fish.

Well, SeaChem's instructions say treat for 5 days, but that just seems way too short. I definitely like your suggestion of waiting to see if there's a reappearance, though.

Well, you kind of answered your own question. :) Conditions either during shipping or in your QT tank resulted in stress that resulted in marine ich that had not shown up in a previous qt.

I buy fish locally, make sure they are eating at the store, never qt, always treat my tanks as if they are not properly cycled, regardless of age, and have never had a case of marine ich. Meaningless stat, but so far so good.

So I would say QT is required for all shipped fish AND regardless of QT if you stress the fish out odds are it will catch ich because it may alreay be in your display.

How is that odd? I'm using Metronidazole/Focus/garlic infused foods, not Cupramine.

:)

Not in my DT... It took 6 weeks to cycle, then didn't get a fish for another month.

Ohhh... didn't know that. DERP! I wouldn't trust it :/ Mostly because I'd be paranoid and would just use a proven method and be done with it.

Well, I'm not sure how effective metronidazole is... 7 days later, I see no positive changes.

Picked up a bottle of Cupramine today, but the LFS didn't have a copper test. Fortunately getting one overnight through Amazon Prime was only an extra $6, so I'll start the copper tomorrow. She's still got plenty of appetite even though she's occasionally trying to scratch the itch.

Goodluck! Cupramine worked very fast for me although it could have just been a coincidence and the Ich was ready to fall off.

Well, as the ich cysts had returned after 10 days of metro, I ramped up cupramine over 48 hours to 0.5ppm, and had kept it there almost a week. She was still eating yesterday before a water change, but i thought maybe her respiration was a little quick. I figured it was just due to the ammonia levels prior to the WC and figured it'd be OK and I brought the copper level back up after the WC. She was still swimming around when I came home today, even looked good, as the cysts were finally gone. I had prepared her food and was getting ready to feed her when I noticed that one of her hiding pipes was way out of place... and she was dead on the bottom where the pipe had been.

Sorry for the loss :( What type of fish was it?

Did you have a copper test kit? Seems odd she was still eating and then up and died :(

It was a female Watanabei Angel.

I do have a copper test, and was using it to test/maintain levels.

That sucks :( I know angels are one of the fish that are a bit sensitive to copper, maybe hypo is the way to go. At least you can get your money back.

Money back for what?

The fish? I had it for like six weeks before it succumbed.

ah... if it had showed up with Ich w/i the 1st 2 weeks... you can call LA and they will extend your guarantee. I had them extend mine for 2 months before.

Poop :/

^Not an easy thing to do on a QT, Fark.

Really? I cant really image too many things in this hobby easier, or as inexpensive for what you get out of it.

The 9 watt Turbo Twist, it just hangs on the side.

A small pump.

2 feet of 1/2" tubing.

Maybe a 1/2" ball valve if the pump is too fast.

When youre done using it on the QT, just install it on the display.

Add a TLF 150 reactor for carbon and gfo, maybe (it comes with the ball valve), for $35.
