Cube Sump?

I have a 60 gallon cube (24"x24"x24") and I want to upgrade my sump. Unfortunately my stand is also cube shaped. I'm looking at the Deep Blue 28 gallon cube (20"x20"x16") as a possible sump. I want to separate it into the filter sock (I use 4" round sock), the skimmer (thinking of upgrading to a Reef Octopus), a small spot for heaters and RKL probes, a decent size fuge, and obviously my mag drive return pump. Anyone ever designed a cube sump? Or have any bright ideas on the best way to go about it? Thanks!

Arkayology

I bought mine used from someone who either made it themselves or had it custom made. I was in the same boat and you and just waited until I found something used. A custom cube sump can be ordered, but it is muy expensivo.

Here is 18x18x16 with three chambers for skimmer, fuge, and return.

I just messaged a local guy to see what a custom sump will cost. Mines fine for the moment but I'd love to upgrade so hopefully he can help me out.

Make sure the sock is easy to get to, in front is best.

Skimmer cup too. Between the two, sock should be up front over the skimmer. Just to make it cleaner and easier to change, I change mine like every other day, or after a big feeding. Skimmer cup gets cleaned about once a week.

Add an ATO reservoir, option RODI bulkhead with float switch to make it easy to fill. You can plumb your RODI right to it, or just use the quick disconnect feature of guest fittings.

Make the return pump chamber small and shallow. Put your ATO sensor in that well, for tighter tolerance on osmolarity/SG.

Dedicated skimmer chamber helps a lot for keeping it tuned, if your water level fluctuates in that one, youll be constantly fiddling with it. Have your skimmer picked out before building sump, kinda duh; make it a little bigger incase you decude to get a bigger skimmer later on.

This eBayer sells 100 micron socks cheap. Item number 390777251527 . He makes 8 inch socks too, but they end up being like 5 or 6 inches long in real life.

I have a sump with sock, fuge, skimmer, ATO, and return pump but I just want a little more room. It's hard to find something to utilize the space in such a tight cabinet. :)

Already got an answer. $229 for an 18x18x16 custom sump. They're backed up so it would be a couple months to get it but I'll put down a deposit and finalize the plan end of this week. :)

I have the same exact problem. Cant be solved in the same way as a simple rectangular sump that just flows in one side over some baffles and out the other side.

Go back to the 20x20 if you can. You'll want that extra volume. Nice price if well built, kinda amazed at how low it is, explains the back log.

I have two cubes, one with rectangle sump running from one side to the other. My second sump is a cube design, running in a U shape. This sump has an area for skimmer, fuge, and return pump. I feel the cube sump is much more efficient use of space.

  • 1 month later...

More expensive option but has anyone tried the Trigger Systems cube sumps??? They offer a "crystal" and "ruby" versions, 18" and 20" square respectively. Look awesome and would be perfect under my 50g cube. Would love some input as I'm considering one for my next sump.
