Very nice! We've been talking about bonsai on our local reef club forum and I've got the itch to try it :)

Very cool! I've always wanted try bonsai's but I just can't seem to find the time / energy / motivation to learn everything I need to get started.

We have a lengthy thread in the lounge about them somewhere, this might be a better place for a discussion though.

It great, way more in depth then you think, just be willing to live and learn as you will kill a few trees along the way.

Very cool!!!

Thanks!

Incredible bonsai collection !

It's getting there as I'm just starting out

The carving is much different now then a water slide lol. I plan on adding a japanese maple and trident to my collection soon.

Here's one of mine. The other isn't really picture worthy. I've had this one for a year now. This pic is a little off. I have since adjusted the guide wires some.

Got to start somewhere right! That looks like a ginseng ficus which isn't really used as bonsai but I have seen it done

yeah theyare sold at a lot of big box store becuase they look like bonsai as they are a tubar root type of tree. The roots swell with water and thats why it looks like a bigger trunk then it is. I have talked to a few Japanese masters and when I mentioned that ficus I got laughed at(not in a bad way), they kindly told me that they are not bonsai. It can be done though just take special care.

This guys blog is fun to follow and he mainly deals with tropical bonsai

yes they can-prunus ume(flowering plum) is a very common one in Japan

Prunus glandulosa is what I have-I've heard ume is hard to maintain but glandulosa is much tougher and backbud like mad as seen above. The flowers or a light pink and very pretty

there are many in the Prunus family but they need more care as bug n birds seem to love them lol

Here's some good info

I have 2 80 y/o Ponderosa Pines and experts I've talked to say you should always pinch off the candles when they appear to keep the growth compact. The needles look great so I wouldn't worry. W-

These are very interesting. Are bonsai usually started from a cutting of a full size tree or are they ever grown from seed?

Both. But from seed will take a pretty long time to get an old, aged look.

Advanced experts do something called air layering. It's a technique of finding a branch from

an existing older, large tree (that will make a great small tree), wrapping sphagnum moss around the base of the branch

where you want to eventually cut it and waiting for new roots to sprout in the moss. Once that happens you

cut the branch with the new roots and repot it. Voila! An early start of a new bonsai tree. :)

Also fall in fertalizer crazy time to get eveything ready for winter- I have a few different types of ferts but this is what I use about twice a week during fall, with a couple chemical ferts that have micro in them

It was also brought to my attention a crazy sale for bonsai tools and wire that I couldn't help myself. I ordered them from Japan and there master level stainless steel tools!. I only ordered 2 tools as there pricey and got a butt load of bonsai wire. I'll take a picture when they get here!

so I'll get some pics and updates soon!

Also got a new bonsai Pinus strobus(eastern white pine)-not the greatest bonsai material, but for 10$ and a 4" trunk I couldn't resist lol

pardon my awesome cellphone shot

Love the cypress. I have a cypress grove started in my backyard pond. Has a long way to go before it looks like yours though.

Have had a fair share of other bonsai. We used to have an amazing 70 year old trident maple that our house sitter decided was the only plant on the property that didn't need watered. Same year a friends dog decided to eat a 30 year jade. Have been a bit demotivated since losing those two.

That would suck, I lost a 30 year old spruce not to long ago due to borers :(
