Gaping Derasa

As my parameters in my 46 have been stable the last few months I decided to get a few clams from liveaquaria, since I've always gotten good stock from them. I got one small maxima and a 3 and a half inch derasa. Both have been in for three days and seemed to be doing well. But starting today it's been going through periods of gaping.

First it only did it for about an hour but now it's been doing so for several. I've had crocea and maxima before and never lost a clam, but this guy's worrying me a lot.

The Maxima is still just fine as is everything else in the tank. I've not seen any creatures go after it. I can see that its still moving and trying to pump water, and the mantle hasn't retracted too far inside the shell, but it's not looking good. Byssal thread's not attached to anything but it was out last time I moved him,

My stats are all good. No ammonia or nitrite. I've tested my nitrates and found 0, even had an lfs test to get the same result earlier today. Alkalinity and calcium are fine, so is PH.

Is there anything I can do to save this guy? I hate to lose a clam.

It already passed, I'm afraid. So far Maxima is still good, responding well to anything that makes a shadow. I'll keep it well monitored.

Frankly, I'm puzzled. I've been up all night testing my water (and trying to save it) to find something that caused it but I really can't. Maxima is still doing great although the whole experience has me afraid for it.

Is there any thing derasas need that Maxima's don't?

Derasas are easier to care for than Maximas. What were the actual test result numbers? What test kit were you using? Did you burp the clam when adding it in? Did you check for hitchhiker a on it? Was your water too clean? ( none of these things besides not burping the clam will kill it that fast IMO)

I used an API nitrate test tube test. And the color came in a pretty solid yellow. I have an old salifert nitrate test kit somewhere in storage but I haven't used it. I did burp the clam and used a 2 hour drip acclimation on it trying not to expose it to air. I could not find a single parasite for the life of me. Maybe the water was too clean.

Well, at this point, I suppose I should use this thread to make sure my Maxima is in the best possible health.

Right now he looks absolutely healthy. The intake is visible but not gaped at all, mantle is near full extension. I tried to get a picture but as lovely as hydras are in person I can't get the color right. Will try on the DSLR later. For now, this is the best I could get.

Im willing to bet it was an ORA Deresa. Ive always said, DD has a big problem with their ORA Deresas and squamosas. Its not your fault.

I had the same thing happen before.

Never figured out why,

Bought another derasa, it was fine.
