Pistol shrimp all by himself?

Hi everyone,

I have a 4 gallon pico that is primarily a zoa garden, though I have one spiny star astrea snail that takes care of algae.

I'd like to add a pistol shrimp. I've got a pistol/YWG combo in my 75g, and they're both fun to watch. I know I could add a clown goby, but I really don't want to add any fish to a tank this small. Will a pistol shrimp do OK on its own? I know they're essentially blind, and I almost always see them as part of a goby team. I just want to make sure he'll be fine by himself.

Thanks!

I have a candy pistol (the kind that pairs) who's goby passed away and he is totally fine by himself. I don't see him as often since he doesn't have a goby but its a 40B not a 4g so thats a huge footprint difference.

there are many pistol shrimps that do not pair with gobies. KP aquatics has red snapping shrimp which are one such kind.

Also reef lobsters are pretty cool.

Awesome! Thank you both! Don't reef lobsters get a little big, though? I saw a beautiful purple-blue one at my LFS but I think he was probably 4"+. I'll look into tiny ones if there are species that could live comfortably in a 4g.

Sorry to hear about your goby. My YWG was my very first fish and he's still my favorite. Big personality on that little guy (though he's a total fatty).

Ya, they are great fish. I will get another at some point. I had the goby 4-5 years and he was monster sized when I got him. Perhaps it was just his time.

i have a randalls in my 2.6 vase, it's been in there for over a year. the display structure i built for this vase is made up of various tubes, so the shrimp has security. . i had to remove half the sand bed because it was getting ridiculous.. the shrimp kept burying things, i lost a coupla of smaller lps polyps to the constant burying. but it's getting better now that the shrimp has less sand to move around.....

it's a nice pet. it fights with the maintenance tools i use. it has no one to love either...i think it's fine... yours should be fine.
