h8z2luze
Well right now I'm using a Rio 2100 on my 20L which works great but I think will need more for my 40. What do you guys suggest? The quieter the better. I had a mag7 and I I will never buy another one again. So loud and bulky. Oh and I will be using two bulk heads for a overflow so I figure something around the 700 gph range should work fine. Link to comment
glennr1978
The new dc pumps are pretty appealing IMO. You can find the jebao pumps on amazon pretty cheap. Link to comment
h8z2luze
I was thinking jebao. I like my wp10 Link to comment
h8z2luze
Ended up getting a quiet one 3000 from my buddy for 35 bucks. They have good reviews and he said he loved it. He switched to a bigger tank and got the bigger pump. Link to comment
Horerczy
I have a quiet one. They are Vera nize. Link to comment
Nanofreak79
I have a quiet one. They are Vera nize. Is it quiet? I like lower flow through the sump and push the water with powerheads/wave makers in the tank for circulation. Link to comment

Mine makes a little noise but it's being used externally. The skimmer air intake makes more noise though. Link to comment
defective_weeble
Man, my Mag 7 is driving me insane. It's so freaking loud. I hate to think that I've spent this much money on a pump that will never be quiet... Link to comment

Also not very stoked about it so you're not alone. Link to comment
farkwar
Quiet one 4000. I want a lot of flow through the filter sock. Its quiet enough. Refugium is fed by a tee off return, with ball valve. PA had them on sale for like $73 but out if stock now. DRS FS has them for like 85. Link to comment

What are you using for a return now? I'm just dumbfounded as to why this thing is so loud being magnetic. Link to comment
05XRunner
i am the opposite of everyone here. seems everyone is trying to get crazy amount of flow from their return. I run a little Rio 800 plus for my 20L sump into my 40breeder. I want water to run slowly through my sump so my skimmer has more time with the water cleaning it as it passes. at the height its pumping I am only pushing about 80gph but I am perfectly happy with a 2x turnover going through the sump. my WP-25 is in there to make the actual flow in the tank. so I paid $18 for a pump that is tiny and dead silent doesnt use alot of power and very very low heat added to tank from it. My thought process was more along the lines of this: Buy a bigger pump, then branch it off to run reactors so I only need 1 pump. But I absolutely see your point of view...and am considering it myself. Link to comment
05XRunner
i dont like to make things to complicated. I just added a CPR nano bio pellet reactor and the size of it is probably smaller then adding a reactor feeding off a larger pump. Link to comment

I change mine every day or every other day. When I get 5 or 6, I throw them in the washing machine. They come out nice and clean. I was cleaning them by hand when I only had a couple, screw that. Going fast or slow make no difference with a skimmer. A skimmer goes as fast or slow as its own pump goes. Link to comment

Going fast or slow make no difference with a skimmer. A skimmer goes as fast or slow as its own pump goes. I'm still deciding exactly how I want this to work. I know that I'm going to re-do the plumbing for my sump. I have a 3/4 spa flex return line. Right now that's connected to a Y. The Y has a ball valve that controls flow to a 1-inch line that hits the refugium. I'm going to switch this out to another 3/4 line and use hard PVC because the 1-inch flex line that I'm running is just a pain in the butt. It won't sit where I want it to sit. The question that I'm still asking myself is whether the Mag 7 is overall just too much flow. I have to send a LOT of it back to the sump to keep the GH 700 kit from gurgling. But even if I didn't, the flow through my sump would still be really fast. I'm thinking that I need to dial things back a bit and maybe go for a 400 or 500 gph pump. I'm honestly not sure how else I could run a 40B/20L setup still have a slow flow through my refugium. Link to comment
farkwar
Get the mag 9.5, at least. You're going to lose about 200 gph just with the head resistance getting back up to tank. You can put a ball valve above return if you're worried. Tee off the return, with gate valve (I have a ball valve and harder to finesse rate), to the refugium. I like the idea of not shunting return, using drain water, but I like the idea of having all drain water go through sock better. Otherwise refugium becomes a detritus dump, and hence nitrate factory. I have a 29g sump now. Bought a 20L because it has lower sides, to get to zeo reactor easier(not built yet). I agree about the flex pvc, but it has less resistance because of no 90s or 45s, but it does tend to go where it wants. Ill post a vid, if you're interested. My set up is pretty close to what you intend. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
I'm surprised you think a Rio 2100 isn't enough for a 40b. I used a Rio Plus 1400 on mine and I was pushing a little too much water through the sump @ 4' of head (same pump is now being used in the same sump on my 10 hex with the same 1.5" pvc overflow I used on the 40b). 05XRunner
yea i started out with the Rio 1400 and switched it down to rio 800 the 1400 is now my salt mixing pump and to pump water in for my water changes id never buy another mag pump again. they are just to noisy and vibrate to much. after Mag 5 I owned before I would never buy one or recommend one again Link to comment
h8z2luze
Well I guess it's all a matter of preference on how much turnover you want. Link to comment
defective_weeble
Fark - video would be great. How do you keep a flow rate low enough in the sump with a pump that big? My 7 feels like I'm running whitewater rapids. School me, man! Link to comment
