LED and RO questions for new tank

Hi there!

I'm about to start up my new 50g cadlights cube o love. Upgrading from a 14g biocube FINALLY.

I have a couple of equipment questions.

First off- lighting.

I'm going with LED's. Many folks have recommended Ecotech Radion Gen 2. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Second- RO system.

None of the LFS's in my area carry RO. So I'm going rogue.

Any suggestions on a good yet economical system? I've looked at everything from 7 stage down to 3 stage- all sizes and prices. But I'm asking for input from the real experts- you guys out there actually using the stuff.

Thanks in advance!

Looking forward to some sage advice

RO/DI - go with five stage. One 0.5 micron sediment filter, one 0.5 micron carbon block, the RO membrane, and two DI canisters - one Spectrapure Maxcap and one Silicabuster. That's about the best you can get, and the dual DI will be not only insurance in case the first DI resin exhausts, but the first canister will make the second last longer.

While I use a Spectrapure MaxCap myself and love it, you may not need to go to that level depending on your tap water condition. Their remanufactured $140 MPDI is an excellent system for 95% of the users. The price of the MaxCap scares off a lot of people but once you see what it saves in the long run its an excellent value if you make a lot of water or have tough water conditions.

Sorry to Hijack.

What about for drinking? I know the drinking kit splits off before the DI but how do I know what's good drinking water?

I drink a gallon a day, my girl too depending on training, my kids too but they had kidney reflux. I'm more concerned about the best water possible for my family not my fish :D

RO water is great for drinking, DI water is also fine, but it is in no way necessary for drinking, number one you use more of your DI resin, number two because it tastes terrible (I guess the 'lack of taste' is what is terrible lol).

This diagram shows where and how to install a drinking water kit on a reef type RO/DI system. Note the placement of the tee and check valve between the RO membrane and the DI filter so you have pressurized RO water for drinking, cooking, icemaker etc. and the DI will not be affected by the TDS creep that may be present in the pressure tank.

We have drank RO exclusively in our home for about 20 years now and love it.

+1 on this. In the end you save money because the DI cartridge will last longer and is the most expensive to replace.
