My First Coral

Last week I was finally able to get some inhabitants for my 10g nano. Picked up a Firefish, Astrea snail and 2 hermits. Today I ran across a AWESOME deal at my LFS. I went in to see what they had for coral, wanted either zoa's or polys to start with and they had a very nice piece with a lot of polyps on it.

when I asked how much they weren't sure because they couldn't remove the polyps from the rock they were on. So the manager said she would sell it by the pound for the live rock. I asked how much it weighed and when they tried to weigh it the scale broke lol. So the employee asked the manager again and when she came back she asked me if 30.00 was too much. I said HECK NO!!!! I took it lol. Think I got a great deal....here are 2 different pics of it.

I weighed the rock when I got home and it was just a hair over 2 pounds. Think I got a great deal hahaha.

Just had to share, so excited :D

What kind of lighting do you have? I got some of these as my 1st coral too that started out brownish but turned a pretty green under some full spectrum led's.

I currently have the MarineLand reef capable LED's. In total the instructions say they put out 120par total. I was checking on them a little earlier before the timers shut the lights off and they were all open and they look to be a nice dark red color.

Those look like mine as well. If they are the same, with enough light the centers will turn a nice green color. With feeding the tentacles on mine have also extended a ton. Very cool for the kids to watch them get fed as well. Great score!

They have opened really good this morning....going to be heading back to the LFS today and see if I can find anything else. That is good to know about feeding, will see if I can grab some coral food as well while I am out. Thanks MysterRC!

Watch out with that light. I used to have that light, it is not reef capable. It will support low light lps and zoas but dont epect them to color up.

I will be. Currently I am only looking at softies, zoa's etc. until I upgrade to a larger tank. Since this is my first experience with SW I wanted to make sure I could handle it and keep up with it before putting a lot of money into it.

Btw, I feed those polyps mysis shrimp primarily. I picked up the Hikari frozen cubes and feed them with a baster… very gently squirt a little in to each head and watch them clamp on to it… pretty cool to watch.

Sounds perfect. I did pick up some mysis already...my firefish doesn't seem to like the pellet food so I got the mysis and he just pigs out lol. I still put a couple pellets for my hermits though. Can't wait to see how the polyps react when I feed them tonight.

Firefish also like brine shrimp BTW. pellets not so much unless it's small and they get use to it.

Found that out the hard way hahaha. Going to pick up some brine tomorrow when I hit the LFS. Didn't make it today as planned but will tomorrow.

Was also really neat seeing the coral grab the mysis and eat too. Making the coral bug kick in more! Watch out credit card haha.

Did you actually double order the marine snow or did you just list it twice in your excitement? ;)

OMG...yeah I listed it twice by accident :D, let the excitement take over lol.

Haha, nice! Enjoy… wish I had not completely obliterated my budget for my tank already or I’d be ordering some things as well. I’m jealous!

I feel ya. After that order that did it for my budget as well for a while lol. But I will be able to fill up a bunch of empty space now so there is actually something in it.

Yes, there was a minimum of 99.00 to get the free FedEx. If I would have order about 2 hours sooner would have had it today. Good thing I am off tomorrow.

Here is a new pic of my re-scaped tank after doing my water change yesterday. Should have enough room for me new inhabitants that will be here tomorrow.

Good deal. Usually it's around $250 min. :D

I like your scape!

Thank you Gena :). Yes it was a really good deal, think I will be dealing with them on a regular basis.

Local reefers are the people to buy from! You make a friend, get a deal and get to kick the tires about tanks.

Very true KyleRay. Was talking with someone at the LFS today and he gave me his information to keep in contact. Said he will be fragging some pulsing Xenia shortly and when he does will let me know. Said I could have it for free! Plus he also turned me on to a friend of his who has a site that he sells corals from right here about an hour from where I live.

God this is such a great hobby :D

Pulsating Xenia and Green Star Poly are the weeds of the reef world and can take over your tank if not careful. If you add them, put them on a rock away from the main aquascape.

Link to comment

Will do. I have heard this about Xenia and Kenya Tree too. The polyps I have now are all on one rock away from the others so hopefully won't have too much problem with them.
