Melanopus, the new, "it" clown!

Hello All,

I've been dreaming a lot about different livestock as usual and I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm done with the standard Perc/Occy clown. I keep findiny myself thinking about the Melanopus clown (cinnamon clown). Those yellow-YELLOW fins! The bluest stripe! The jet black pectoral fins! It just screams sexy! Pics really don't do it justice. If you've seen it live, you know what I mean.

I think the only downfall to this fish might be how large it gets. So, you need a bigger tank for it. I've read they can get aggressive later in life, but probably not more than any other clown that size.

I'd really love to see this fish more available in captive bred varieties.

Ya, they are great looking! I was thinking about getting one in the future but a WYSIWYG would be nice. I have noticed some do not have as much of the nice yellow.

They are currently available. They don't get "that" big; but yes, they need more space than the more typical Ocellaris.

Yeah, I've seen them online, but it'd be nice to see them in the LFS a little more. All I see when I go out is tank after tank of picassos, mochas, and platinums. The more I see them, the more I'm like, m'eh. After coming across a tank with a pair of melanopus, I was hooked!

Very true! Some are more brown. I think the ones with the yellow are originally from the Cook Islands region. Another reason I'd like to see more breeders focus on this particular variety.

That is a really nice looking fish! And the price is great too. I wish I could see one in person.

Go looking for it. You won't be disappointed! This fish has me rethinking my next setup entirely.

That thing looks like a retarded mutant clown that sort of resembles spongebob's besty Patrick. Just plain fugly is my opinion.

Lolz! To each his/her own. Again, pics really don't capture the magnificence of this fish. Have you seen one in person? If not, I think you'll change your tune when you do. The blue in that stripe alone is enough to wow. Not to mention the fins that practically glow they're so intensely yellow.

I agree that often pics do not do a fish justice and I have not seen on IRL...but according to those pics, i concur with the fugly opinion

They are mean and not really nano fish at full size. I really like them but have just had to return some tomatoes due their similar temperament, they bit my other fish and were rough with the anemone, a bit of a shame really.

I believe the stripe is generally white. But like a number of clownfish, this particular fish's white stripe is blue (this can occur in various degrees and shades).

D'oh! Sorry to hear that. I can imagine the bigger females being bullies to other fish, but to anemones? What did it do? Just rub non-stop till it closed up?

Pulled some of the tentacles off the anemone, and really rubbed it hard!

Dang! Pulled them off??!! Amazing. Sorry to hear that. Good to know.

I wonder if the A. Frenatus (tomato) is more or less aggressive than the Melanopus (cinnamon)?

I would say generally frenatus edge it but not by much. The reason being that Frenatus generally form pairs on their own in a large bta much like premnas so they have to defend the anemone on their own, so get bigger and are more aggressive? The melanopus are found in large groups in anemone fields so there is more of them, they live in more of a community so generally aggresion is lower?

that is somewhat irrelevant to our tanks as we tend to keep singles or pairs of both species so they may get more aggressive than they would in the wild?

Melanopus (Namely certain regional variants) have a surprising amount of blue.

True, a dedicated species tank or maybe one other tough species.

This info is gold! Thank you for contributing it. I didn't realize the difference in nature.

Good point about captivity though. Who knows how that affects things?
