darkdancer333
My tank is in 3rd week cycle and my diatoms just keep getting darker I'm trying to let them cycle out but they just keep getting stronger. I had snails but those I can't keep alive. Ive gone through 6.. I want to brush the rocks but I been holding off.. I wanted to try a fish an coral but with this all over the rock I am not sure LOL I did my test results today an they seemed ok MG=1400 CA= 480 ALK= MEQ=3.7 DKH= 10.4 Ammonia = 0 Nitrite = 0.1 Nitrate = 5-10 Link to comment
Gilligan
I would wait another couple 2 weeks. My rocks were blast white within 36 hours of the silica being used up. You may not be through your cycle yet anyways, but are near the end. Hang in there. Link to comment

Gilligan
The snails may be dying because your tank may not fully cycled. They are a type of algae that enclose themselves in a cell wall made of silica. I don't think snails eat diatoms because of this protection. Someone may correct me here. It's not really anything to worry about, unless you still have it in the coming months. Yes the just disappear in most situations. Sometimes somebody has some rock that has stuff continually leaching out of it causing different types of algae etc. But what you have is normal so far, and generally indicates you are near the end of your cycle. ps2cho
I've had diatoms for 2 months now...its slowly dying off... With phosphates that high, do a series of big water changes. Leave the fish until your parameters are correct. Link to comment
