boltless rack system for tank stand

Has anyone used one of these for their tank? If so, what did you use to skin it?

I found a site that lets you build your own by simply purchasing the individual pieces. The 3 shelf system on the right is what i was thinking of, but I would raise it higher to make the sump more accessible below. And instead of metal shelves, I would buy some solid wood planks (oak or pine) from a hardware store.

Do they provide the weight rating of the shelves? Water is about 8lbs per gallon but figure an average of about 10 for rock and sand.

Yeah they are 500lbs per shelf. These racks are used in warehouses. I was thinking of using acrylic for the skin attached by Velcro.

This will be for a 12 gallon long mr aqua.

What size tank were you thinking of putting on it? For an aquarium, 500lbs seems a little flimsy to me to feel comfortable with anything over 20 gallans.

Then they would probably be fine. However, from my experience with that style shelving, you will want to secure it to a wall for stability.

Man you are fast! Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about that, good idea.

The problem with this style is the shelves are only sitting in a tab and there is no ridgid connection to keep them from moving side to side. They are designed to be used as shown in the picture. Multiple units connected together to give lateral strength. The end units are normally bolted to a wall or other solid support for stability.

One other thing to think about is what they are made of and how it will react to salt water.

Check out EZTubes.com , they have a similar setup but looks much nicer as they use steel pipes with connectors.

I believe that Marc (Melevsreef) has used EZTubes for a light rack and a few stand, IIRC the 60g needed to be reinforced with a little wood but that is also a lot of pressure with it being a 24x24 space.
