Stocking for a 36 gallon...

So I am going to be upgrading my 10 gallon to my old 36 bowfront tank in the next few months. I currently have two clownfish and am wanting to add a few more active fish to the new tank. I would love a tang but I know that my tank is too small so does anyone have any suggestions? I have been looking at possibly a 6 line wrass, midas blenny, coral beauty or even a dottyback. I also have a reef setup with corals so the least likely to nip at corals.

I have a neon dottyback in my 30 gallon and I LOVE him. Gets along great with my two clowns. They say dottybacks can be aggressive, but he's never shown any ferocity towards tank mates- new or old. Midas blenny is a great choice as well, everyone whose owned one says they love them. Very pretty. You could add Bengaii/Pajama cardinals or chromis. Not much in the way of personality, but good for filling that mid level with swimmers. Wrasse is also a great addition.

Be careful with angels even if they are considered "reef safe". They are always potential nippers. Honestly I think you could find a flashier fish.

Check out liveaquaria.com it has the best run down for fish selecting.

Midas blennies are definitely cool. Maybe some type of basslet like a royal gramma. Banggai cardinals are pretty cool too. 6 line wrasses can be quite aggressive so I wouldn't recommend it just for that reason.

Thanks guys for the responses! I have a problem of liking to many fish haha how many would you suggest I can have in my 36? Like 4 or 5 possibly? I really do like the Midas Blenny's so I think I am def. going to go with one of them when my LFS gets one in.

I would not recommend a six line wrasse. Just destroyed my aquascape trying to catch mine. Spent an hour and a half trying to catch him. He was bullying all my other fish and killing some of them. Even killed my hermit crabs. IMO I would stay away from them.

My favorite wrasse for that size tank is a yellow coris. I don't know how well it would work with a midas blenny since they are similar color.

try to avoid the coral beauty as angels really love lots of space. I had one in my 46 bowfront and it started nipping at my coral so i gave it to a friend who has a 75 gal fowlr tank and the fish is so much happier with all the space. as with six lines, i hear they can get really aggressive as they grow older. I really like purple firefish and they are a nice peaceful splash of colour.

Do a yellow coris wrasse imo. Beware, midas blennys can be aggressive in small tanks... my midas blenny is the biggest asshole fish ever. Kept taking chunks out of my designer clowns fins so now he's in confinement. He is MEAN.

Fang Blenny's are peaceful open-water swimmers and beautiful.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a 36 bowfront and I have a midas blenny in it and he is very happy. They like nooks and caves to back into and peek out of. Firefish gobies are nice too. I have a purple firefish. The tank should be covered with both of those since they are jumpers. I currently have 6 fish in mine but I faithfully do a 4-7g WC weekly for nutrient export. Also I have LPS and a clam which don't demand totally low nutrient water.
