Upgrading 10g to 37g.. need planning help!

I came across a deal I may not be able to pass up, a 37g tall tank (in the right dimensions that I need) with stand for $100.

 

I would like to drill it myself and make it "reef ready." The 10g will become the sump tank. The seller wasn't able to find any manufacturer label on the tank, but assuming it is only tempered glass on the bottom, can I drill one of the "sides" instead of the back?

 

I would need to have a very clean look, and ideally I'd love to drill the bottom but that wouldn't be possible with the tempered glass it seems.

 

Equipment, etc. is all up in the air right now, as my main priority would be just getting the tank ready.

Will I have difficulty growing any plants with this "tall" tank? The dimensions are 30" across, 12" deep, 23" tall.

 

I do have space for a longer footprint, but 37g is already on the upper end of what I can house in my apartment. Is the 30"x12"x23" a standard size for a 37g tank. Ideal for me would be a tank 30-40" across, 16"-20" tall, and no more than 12" deep.

 

Would there be other options for me without having to build a custom size tank?

The foot print is not ideal for reef applications. It will be difficult to light and aqua scape which is why you see 40 Breeders often but not 55g in reef aquaria. It can be done though. Is there a petco where you live? They have $1 per gallon sales and a 20g long or 29g would fit those dimensions. 20g Long being easier to light.

 

Plants will depend on your lighting.

Yea, the 37g turned out to be not a good size. I built cardboard frames so I could get a feel for the size of what I need. It seems for my space 40g long tank is best. Here's a pic of a 40g long frame around my current 10g tank (also in another thread I started):

I should change the title to "40g" not 37g. I have a question, maybe the answer is simple but I'm just not seeing it.

 

I'm looking at this overflow kit to put on a 40g long tank to make it "reef ready": http://glass-holes.com/700-In-N-Out-Complete-System-innout7.htm

 

 

I see that the water from the tank comes into the overflow and then drains out through the plumbing from the drilled hole where this overflow installs. Where does the return water from the sump tank come back into the main tank? Wouldn't there need to be two holes?
